Cheshire County Mental Hospital Patient Death 1929
« on: Monday 15 February 21 20:15 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone is able to help. I’m trying to track down my Great Great Grandfather. His name was Frank Clarke. He died on 17th November 1929 at age 31 from Dementia Paralytica at the Cheshire County Mental Hospital. I have a copy of his death certificate but I wondered if the hospital records would show anything else up? If anyone is able to help, I would really appreciate it.

Any records are probably at Cheshire Archives. They may be able to help.

Have you looked up the causes of dementia paralytica? I have recently found a distant cousin of my mother’s who was returned from Salonica in 1919 with general paralysis of the insane another name for dementia paralytica. He had joined the Army in 1908 and his Army papers survived complete with medical information. He died the following year.

Thank you. Yes I found a really interesting article here;

He was married to my Great Great Grandmother in 1925 but died in the hospital in 1929, I’m really intrigued to find out what happened in those four years.

I will contact the Cheshire archives to see if they’ve got any more information.

Hi, Cheshire Archives are your best option for information. There are registers of entry to the Asylum which survive, I found some limited information concerning a great aunt in them. Just to say that there is a 100 year rule on disclosure of information on some records. It’s of note that your relative was very young to have suffered from this condition. I do wonder if this diagnosis was just ‘tacked on’ to his death certificate as in those days a more refined diagnosis may not have been available. Cheshire Archive staff are very helpful. Good Luck.

 you can obtain records before the 100 ,years is up
By signing a confidentiality clause.

My great grandfather died in 1924 ,whenwe obtained hospital records(abt 2018)

 we found he had been admitted in 1920 *& there was a weekly comment from doctor.

 there was also a photo and profile ofhis family stating he was second elsest of 11 children and giving his sister as next of kin .

He married Maud Stevenson on 26th March 1925 in Stoke on Trent, they both lived in Hanley - Frank at 12 Coleridge Road and Maud at 14 Coleridge Road, so it looks like they were neighbours. The marriage certificate says his Dad was called Jack Clarke and Mauds Dad was called James Stevenson.

His Death certificate says he died at Cheshire County Mental Hospital on 26th November 1929. He was registered on his death certificate as living at 98 Mill Street, Crewe (I think he lived with his grandfather who was a hairdresser and shopkeeper). His Brother W Clarke of 16A Mill Street, Crewe was the informant of the death.
