Emma Eugenia 1838 James Siggs
« on: Friday 29 January 21 14:57 GMT (UK) »
James Siggs arrived on this ship Feb 1838. He had been transported for life. Does anyone have any details about him. Did he gain freedom, marry, stay in Australia. Did life mean life ? I can find no record of him returning to the UK. He was born 1798, Haverhill, Suffolk. Thanks

There are 2 criminal register entries for him - birthdate 1799 on both

Suffolk 23.10.1835 - 5 months imprisonment for Larceny
Cambridge 21.10.1836 - Larceny before convicted of felony - transportation for life

His arrival entry shows him as a shoemaker (indifferent)

Given his age I would have thought he would already have been married in England

Hi, thanks for the reply. This James Siggs was born 1798 in Haverhill (conviction says 1799) parents Thomas and Hannah. Hannah died 1800, Thomas 1804. No parents from a young age. He was convicted  21 October 1836 in Cambridge, not too far from Haverhill. His brother was a shoemaker so that is possibly correct.

There was an application for a ticket of leave dated 26 Nov 1851 - but 8 months probation was required.
He finally received his ticket of leave on 24 July 1852 in the Goulburn district, NSW.

This Death in 1854 Goulburn might be worth pursuing further, in case it is your James.
