Hi,
I'm looking for information about a marriage between John HACKNEY born 11th June 1890, Congleton, and Lily BOOTH born 1899, Oldham, Mothers maiden name COLLINS. And Agnes HACKNEY born Oldham 1920 mothers maiden name BOOTH.
In 1886, Audley, Staffordshire, Alfred BOOTH married my great grandmother Mary Ellen HARDING, it proved to be a childless marriage according to family knowledge, they did however adopt a boy called John HACKNEY born Congleton 11th June 1890. At some point before 1901, Alfred leaves blaming Mary Ellen for their lack of children, she however appears on the 1901 census as a housekeeper to Daniel PLANT, with my grandfather George BOOTH born 1899 and adopted son John HACKNEY, she will eventually have another five children with Daniel PLANT, so much for Alfred saying that she could not bear children.
Family talk was that Alfred went to Oldham because he had a sister there, and indeed this is true, in 1901 Alfred is living at Ducie St, Oldham, with Elizabeth BOOTH (wife) born Oldham 1862 and Lily BOOTH (daughter) born Oldham 1899, no marriage record has been found.
In 1911 he is living at The Palladium Inn, Ashton Rd,
Bardsley, Oldham with Rose BOOTH (wife) born Gloucester 1866 and Lily BOOTH (daughter) born 1899 Oldham, again no marriage records have been found.
On the 28th November 1917 John HACKNEY aged 27 married Lillian BOOTH in Oldham. The Marriage Certificate shows John’s father as being Daniel Hackney, Silk Spinner, deceased (correct) and Lillian’s father as Alfred BOOTH Beer Seller deceased (correct).
A possible child to this marriage is Agnes Hackney born 1920 Oldham, Mothers maiden name BOOTH.There is a death for a Lillian Hackney in Oldham 1924 if this was Agnes's mother, what happened to Agnes.
Thanks in Advance Dennis Booth.
