HACKNEY and BOOTH in OLDHAM
« on: Friday 29 January 21 12:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for information about a marriage between John HACKNEY born 11th June 1890, Congleton, and Lily BOOTH born 1899, Oldham, Mothers maiden name COLLINS. And Agnes HACKNEY born Oldham 1920 mothers maiden name BOOTH.

In 1886, Audley, Staffordshire, Alfred BOOTH married my great grandmother Mary Ellen HARDING, it proved to be a childless marriage according to family knowledge, they did however adopt a boy called John HACKNEY born Congleton 11th June 1890. At some point before 1901, Alfred leaves blaming Mary Ellen for their lack of children, she however appears on the 1901 census as a housekeeper to Daniel PLANT, with my grandfather George BOOTH born 1899 and adopted son John HACKNEY, she will eventually have another five children with Daniel PLANT, so much for Alfred saying that she could not bear children.
Family talk was that Alfred went to Oldham because he had a sister there, and indeed this is true, in 1901 Alfred is living at Ducie St, Oldham, with Elizabeth BOOTH (wife) born Oldham 1862 and Lily BOOTH (daughter) born Oldham 1899, no marriage record has been found.

In 1911 he is living at The Palladium Inn, Ashton Rd,
Bardsley, Oldham with Rose BOOTH (wife) born Gloucester 1866 and Lily BOOTH (daughter) born 1899 Oldham, again no marriage records have been found.

On the 28th November 1917 John HACKNEY aged 27 married Lillian BOOTH in Oldham. The Marriage Certificate shows John’s father as being Daniel Hackney, Silk Spinner, deceased (correct) and Lillian’s father as Alfred BOOTH Beer Seller deceased (correct).
A possible child to this marriage is Agnes Hackney born 1920 Oldham, Mothers maiden name BOOTH.There is a death for a Lillian Hackney in Oldham 1924 if this was Agnes's mother, what happened to Agnes.

Thanks in Advance Dennis Booth.

I am just guessing that this girl was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Ann BOOTH nee COLLINS and Samuel HARTLEY.  In 1911 she is given the surname HARTLEY while her older brother is given the surname BOOTH.

Either way, this BOOTH/COLLINS birth is not the child with Alfred and Rose BOOTH in 1911.

Here are the Booths in 1911 - poor transcriptions re birth place of Alfred.

You will have to sign in but it is free.

We aren’t allowed to post information from the 1911 census - hence the link to Family Search.
However, they are not living at the Palladium Inn, Ashton Road.

Thank you for the thanks too  ;).
As Rosie says you have added to your first post now.

It seems to be established that Lily Booth with mother Collins is not your person.

Where do you have the information re the Palladium Inn - is that on a record somewhere? As I wrote earlier, they are not there in 1911.

Just a couple of points.
Alfred in 1901 shows born Oldham. Is his sister living in the same area?
The family are living in Bardsley in 1901 so Lily might be registered in Ashton under Lyne as that is the registration district.
Having said that, I can’t find a birth in the right area. :-\

Alfred Booth on the 1911 Census at the Dog & Partridge, 17, Nelson St, Oldham, with his supposed wife and daughter Rose Booth and Lily Booth. His sister, Mary Ann Wildblood nee Booth is living at 587, Mills Terrace, Oldham Rd, Bardsley.
