The Earls and the Wilkinson families Westmorland
« on: Friday 29 January 21 05:58 GMT (UK) »
In researching my ancestor Thomas Earl born 1792? Westmorland died 1848 Wigton Cumberland, everything points to Westmorland. I think his parents were a John Earl possibly a Reverend John Earl b 1733 or 1735 Colby d 1799 buried St Lawrence Appleby. He was a chaplain at the old Appleby Gaol . His mother im not sure of her dates at all some dates have been put at 1730 0thers 40 years later , but her name was a Hannah Wilkinson born in Westmorland but died in Wigton . Now ive not been able to consult records in person but everything i check online seems to suggest John Earl was his father . I saw different trees on different siites, its left me confused it has Hannah and John b 1770 and married in 1780 which doesnt add up. Many distant relatives who have gone to Cumbria Archives have had the same answer everything points to John Earl being the father . Now i reckon in Westmorland there is a large amount of Earls there. Also between there and Cumberland itself there are many families with this name im not suggesting they are all related but it cant be dismissed either .I recently did a DNA test Wilkinsons and Earls came up but not any Westmorland Earls as i can see . Anyone with an interest in this please get in touch Christopher

Hi Christopher,

I've recently found an Ancestry DNA match between my Earl line and the line of Thomas Earl of Wigton.  I'm trying to triangulate with a few other cousins, to see if it's a legitimate Earl match or not or along another line.
My line moved from Yorkshire to Wetheral, Cumberland around 1797 where John Earl was a miller. John was born in Bolton on Swale, Yorkshire in 1759 and married Alice Alderson at Middleton Tyas in 1783.  There is room in the family for Thomas, but I haven't located any baptism. John died at Warwick Bridge in 1813.
Devon - Cockwill, Soper, Turner, Bennett, Kimp, Jones, Dicker, Luxton, Hutchings, Trimlett, Hammett, Stevens, Ebsary, Fraine, Pearen, Stidson, Heard, Charters
Cornwall - Nancollas
Cumberland - Earle, Warwick, Atkinson
Northumberland - Stephenson, Cobb, Rickaby
Wiltshire - Avery, Mills, Matthews
Lincoln - Green, Watson, Allison, Webster
Cheshire - Rigby, Stringer
Norfolk - Garrod, Flood, Hubbard, Vincent, Robinson
NE Scotland - Christie, Grant, Merson, McIntyre, Humphrey, Donald, Lawrence

Hi Cody I have came across the Warwick Bridge Earls before after contacting the Earl surname dna project on family tree dna . I g he ave very few real surnamed Earl dna matches and little to go on . But I think we need to work together on this and compare notes ie family tree research and dna analysis . We could correspond via email or other mediums Chris ps il send a message here first

I’ve got to Rev John Earl father William Earl b 1712 Colby d 1776 . Interestingly none of the best lieces of evidence comes via the maternal lines . Rev John wife Hannah Wilkinson b 1749 d 1835 came from DUpton just outside Appleby her ancestors seen to be obviously Wilkinsons and Dobsons and on the maternal side Jacksons . This seems to tie my Earls to this area around Appleby . Plus other evidence that Hannah Wilkinson or Earl died at Wigton where my branch settled and her obituary is mentioned in various newspapers stating she was the widow of Rev John Earl late Chaplain at Appleby Gaol . I’m not sure about the Warwick Bridge connection I think if there is a link it will be further back before my line and Cody Cockwill line moved to Wigton and Warwick Bridge respectively. I’d have to do Family Tree dna il take a wild guess the Earl name Jarl in Norse means noble warrior so a Danish link . I have Yorkshire and eastern England in my dna so maybe that’s it who knows . If anyone wants to contact me anywhere else email etc let me know Christopher.
