Storing videos

I have 2 camcorders that both record to SD cards. If I want to play the videos I have to use the camera on which they were recorded, therefore I have to keep both cameras. My only alternative as I see it is to copy to disc via my PC. Are there any other alternatives?  I only have a desk top PC and am not very with it technically. Any help much appreciated.

Googling “usb to sdcard” will offer some suggestions from £5-99 on Amazon, I also had a DVD player wwich would play sdcards, just a little slot in the side to plug it in

All you need is a card reader, and these can be connected straight to a USB port. These usually have various options for the choice of card. You can then read it like a USB stick and transfer the file over to your computer.

I purchased a multi size card reader from my local supermarket @10pounds.
Depending on where you live, Wilko,PC World,Asda and Tesco all stock a varied range.

Thank you all for your replies. As I said before I am not technically very with it. Could I just confirm that the card readers will read regardless of the equipment used to originate the video? My tv has USB ports would I therefore be able to play it through the TV?

Without trying it, I don't know. You will be better of transferring the footage over to your computer. You can then transfer footage onto a memory stick which should then be playable on your TV.

Yes. The format of SD cards is standardised. How the video is laid out within the files the camera creates IS variable, but manufacturers will use standard formats unless there is a VERY specialised reason not to.

Almost certainly. The players found in most TVs these days cope with most possible video files.

On a PC, if the built-in player doesn't like the format of the video and complains, try VLC media player. It's free - excellent value!

Don't forget to MAKE COPIES of those videos, and store them safely, ideally in a different building. Even if you didn't suffer fire, flood or theft, media wears out.
