Thank you all for your replies. As I said before I am not technically very with it. Could I just confirm that the card readers will read regardless of the equipment used to originate the video?
Yes. The format of SD cards is standardised. How the video is laid out within the files the camera creates IS variable, but manufacturers will use standard formats unless there is a VERY specialised reason not to.
My tv has USB ports would I therefore be able to play it through the TV?

Almost certainly. The players found in most TVs these days cope with most possible video files.
On a PC, if the built-in player doesn't like the format of the video and complains, try VLC media player. It's free - excellent value!
Don't forget to MAKE COPIES of those videos, and store them safely, ideally in a different building. Even if you didn't suffer fire, flood or theft, media wears out.
