St Eugenes church
« on: Monday 25 January 21 22:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi All, looking once again for your help. Can anyone tell me that circa 1880/1890 did St Eugenes church in Londonderry have burial facilities. in other words could people be buried at the church.
If not then where would be the nearest catholic cemetery to St. Eugenes church, and would any relevant information be online,
many thanks.

A quick look at St. Eugne's Cathedral with Streetview (satellite view) shows no room around the site for burials. First place to look for burials would be City Cemetery- lots of information in their records-

Another place to look would be newspaper death notices in case plce of burial mentioned (but remember not everyone's death would have appeared in the paper). Find My Past (pay site) have lots of local papers but you can try doing free searches also-

Thank you Agadowy for your reply, my first choice initially was to search the City Cemetery, however there was no results, ergo, because of family baptisms being primarily at st. Eugenes, my next thought was that the burial would maybe have taken place at this church. From what you say, that there is no room surrounding the church for burial, my next thought would be a cemetery in reasonable distance to the church.
As I do not live in the Londonderry area, I was hoping that someone with knowledge of the church would be able to advise as to the nearest cemetery. As Im sure you already know, there are several cemeteries in Londonderry, the city cemetery not being the only one.

Derry City Cemetery is where people from the City are buried including parishioners from St. Eugene's Cathedral.  The only burials in the ground of St Eugene's are Bishops' of the Diocese.  If you need any help please let me know as I know the area well.

Thank you DorieM for your reply, As I could not locate this person in the city cemetery, my thoughts were that she had possibly been buried at another cemetery in the city.
As  previously stated a lot of her grandchildren had been baptised at St.Eugenes church, so therefore it was a possibility she had been buried there.
Once again thank you for your very helpful reply and interest in this.

Sometimes the cemetery database can be a bit tricky to search- try using just surname (or even the first part of the surname) then scrolling through results. Also when scrolling through results keep checking the address if you know where your family lived.
