wilton gaol records ( I believe this was a prison)
« on: Sunday 17 January 21 15:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi i have stumbled across a ancestor who i believe To be a matilda Sartin born Abt 1823 yeovil. She is showing as being Admitted on the 8th of october 1846 to Wilton Gaol tauton somerset on Acestry uk. I do not have full access to records on there so i was hoping someone would be kind enough to tell me if there is any further info on there and anything they can tell me about this place or why she was admitted.

Thanking you in advance,

Clare

It says vagrancy, sentence 1 month hard labour.

Under previous offences it says 19 Nov 1844 - 14 days vagrancy.

My husband has Sartin in his ancestry and others from the Yeovil area.

Thank you so much. So she was a re offender?
I have manged to go back as far as 1778 with my sartin family history. To a William Sartin born East chinnock.
I've not been able to find much on Matilda apart from she had children out of wedlock one being a john Sartin born 1856.

Wilton Gaol in Taunton had become the County Gaol in 1843.

In th Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser on 14 Oct 1846 there is a notice that Matilda Sartin was committted to Wilton Gaol on 6th Oct for vagrancy-14 days hard labour.

The Sherborne Mercury on 10 Aug 1858 reports that a Matilda Sartin was fined 7s 6d-including costs- at the Borough Petty Sessions... for using obscene language.
