Dates of birth on death certificates are often unreliable. They are reliant on the knowledge of the informant.

I can only say what is written in the GRO Index - and we have to remember that the date of birth is o the date submitted by the informant.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids. They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Thanks for your help, I may need to try an order a certificate based on the date of death from the GRO website and hope it’s right, otherwise it may remain a mystery

Ramsbottom is part of the Heywood Registration District.

If you’re not sure it’s the right death, you can access the cremation register at DeceasedOnline.
https://www.deceasedonline.com
You will need to buy credits to see the image of the register, which should give you his address, the name of the person ordering the cremation, and other information that might help identify him. The minimum purchase for credits at DO is £5.00, which is much cheaper than a death certificate.
