Thank you so much for your very detailed reply, I had a look at the Lancashire Archives as you suggested, makes interesting reading.  Maybe there are more than one couple named John & Sarah, we may never know.  Anyway thanks again for all your hard work, I have been looking for her for years.

A possibility to consider is that her parents weren't married when she was born.

Not necessarily a birth registration unless it was in a baptism register which also contained birth registrations. Some of the Crook babies in St. Michael's baptism register were records of births as there was a tax levied on births at the time and Anglican curates were responsible for collecting the tax. That's why their names were in both St. Michael's and Crossmoor Baptist Chapel baptism registers.
