Leonora Anne Smith nee Carmichael
« on: Friday 08 January 21 23:31 GMT (UK) »
Evening Guys, maybe you can help.

I am trying to find the DOD of Leonora Anne Smith nee Carmichael
DOB 4 March 1866

Her husband William John Cook Smith (left her for another women Sarah)
DOB 1865
DOD UNKOWN (Maybe in Hastings)

They had two children together

Eva Smith
1891-1970
and
Herbert William Smith
1890-1978

The children was separated (I'm guessing around 1900-1910)

Herbert's family have just found out about his sister. Adelaide smith 1866
Herbert went to the 'rich' side of the family (William sister)

Noone is  sure where Eva went to live.

Any help you guy could give would be greatly appreciated on Leonara and Williams DOD or if you can find the children on the Cencus

Can you please include details of where everybody was born - particularly with a surname like Smith

Freebmd shows Leonora was b 1866 Wandsworth but where was William born?  Where were the children born?

Have you looked for them on the 1901 & 1911 censuses - both of which are free to search @ www.familysearch.org

Have you looked for their deaths on www.freebmd.org.uk

Thank you Comberton, I thought the names looked familiar.

There is a Poor Law Union removal notice for Leonora and son Horace John SMITH from the Constance Rd, East Dulwich (Camberwell) workhouse in 1897. Husband (William John) has living at Poplar for 3 years.

Leonora has been living with her mother and other friends since August 1897. "Husband a deserter from Navy. Worked at Cooks Wharf, Manchester Road"

Other children:
Eva
Horace
Florence (died about 14months)

So, there is these children:
1891 Eva Selina Frances  (Lambeth)
1893 Florence Cook    (Camberwell)  died 1895 (Poplar)
1897 Horace John  (Poplar)

emmiesummer, just for interest, did you know that Leonora's brother-in-law was convicted at the Old Bailey for manslaughter? Sad story.

To show neither Leonora nor any of her children were with her father Charles Carmichael and her (step) mother Catherine in  1891 or 1901:

Saturday 14th May 1898 - Camberwell Workhouse
Leonora, b 1870, wife of Wm Jno, Lab.
Horace John 2, b 1896, child of above
Destitute,  Admitted from Gordon Road Workhouse

Per the Removal order of 1898:
The mother  Mrs Carmichael at 1 Elliott Road  since August 1897 to Xmas , was tecnically  Leonora's stepmother, 2nd wife of her father - and her father was alive at that time too.

Leonora's  birth mother Elizabeth B Hughes died 1871 (according to trees)

Her father Charles Carmichael was a widower in 1881 Census but was soon to remarry
Charles remarried 19 June 1881 to: widow Catherine Harriet Appleby
He was an officer/clerk  at the Court of Bankruptcy. Both of Full age.

In 1891, Charles (70) and Catherine (45), are at 8 Elliot Road Lambeth, with one of her Appleby children, and a Boarder.

In 1901, Charles (81) and Catherine (56) are at 1 Elliott Road Lambeth, with two sons JA (41) & JS (39) dittoed as Carmichael.

In 1902, Charles died aged 82, of 1 Elliott road, Brixton .  His will effects were probated as £648, 14s, 2d

Leonora's s daughter Eva Selina Frances Smith b 1891, baptised 26 Jan 1898, of 1 Elliott Street.

Cheers
