Ritchie & Robertson families of Blair Atholl
« on: Tuesday 15 December 20 01:14 GMT (UK) »
I live in New Zealand & for some years I have been researching my paternal 3xg grandmother, Jean RITCHIE (b.1809 Blair Atholl, Perthshire; d. Unknown date; m.1830 Perthshire Andrew BARCLAY (b.1788 Newburgh, Fife; d.1837 Balgonie, Abernethy, Perthshire).
It looks like Jean's parents were George RITCHIE & Janet ROBERTSON. I have no definitive birth or death dates for this couple but it appears that they m.1803 Blair Atholl, Perthshire.
I also cannot find Jean's death record. She is not mentioned in her husband, Andrew Barclay's will of 1837; 1841 their 2 daughters, Elisabeth BARCLAY (b. 1831 Abernethy, Perthshire) & Georgina BARCLAY (b. 1832 Auchtermuchty, Fife) are living with their step-siblings (from Andrew BARCLAY's 1st marriage), David BARCLAY & Janet BARCLAY at Balgonie, Abernethy, Perth. This would suggest that their mother was deceased or 'disappeared'? 1856 Jean is recorded as deceased on her daughter, Elisabeth's marriage certificate. Therefore she probably died between 1832-1841?
I have found a possible sibling for Jean, Alexander RITCHIE (b.1806 Blair Atholl) but his parents are George RITCHIE & Margaret (not Janet) ROBERTSON.
I would really appreciate it if anyone can suggest where/how I could find more info on the RITCHIE & ROBERTSON families of Blair Atholl.

Remember that the name Jean has various variations as Janet and Jane etc.
I notice that Jean Ritchie born 1809 in Blair Athol to George and Janet Robertson probably died as an infant, because the same parents have a daughter born in 1812 named Janet.

It might be worth having a search in the Abernethy graveyard?

I don't think that is a safe assumption. It is true that Jane, Jean and Janet are originally variants of the same name, but at some point Janet has come to be perceived as a separate name. I have come across more families with both a Jean/Jane and a Janet than I have come across instances of a Jane/Jean also being known as Janet.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Pufflet, if Jean died before 1841, and you haven't found a death, what is your evidence that the Jean Ritchie born 1809 in Blair Atholl is your ancestress?

Good call, Rosinish, but not followed up apparently.

Firstly, it is correct that Alexander was a sibling. The Registrar just made a mistake with the name of the mother.  Your ancestor had one brother and two sisters germain all born at Mualich-more in Glen Fender, three being recorded in the OPR.  Elizabeth, the mantua-maker was not recorded in the OPR.

Go to the borenich web-site and find the marriage, then go back in time as Janet Robertson was his second wife. Your ancestor had four half-brothers/sisters.  Three are in the OPR, the eldest is not, but she died in 1864 and there is a death certificate for her.

If you use the Gazetteer on the borenich web-site you can access the 1st Ordnance Survey map and find the location of Mualich-more.  It still exists, but probably is a holiday home.

Good hunting, Throth (www.borenich.co.uk)

Janet Robertson, or Ritchie, died in Blair Atholl parish, 6th September 1860 aged 93 years.

Do you want the details or are you going to get the death certificate from ScotlandsPeople?

Erratum:  Ignore previous messages. We should have checked our own work!

http://www.borenich.co.uk/Ross_Document/Ritchie_Mualich.html

Jane/Jean died at Aldclune, Blair Atholl parish 5th May 1891 aged 84 years and unmarried.
Parents confirmed as George Ritchie and Janet Robertson.

So this is not your ancestor.  Sorry.
