Hello and thanks.

However, I don't get the file choose/load option - I've tried with Chrome and Edge...

Something wrong with my account maybe?!

Hi
You can't post an attachment on a look up requests board.
You can ask an administrator to move your thread to the standard Lincolnshire board.

Hello
I am the Great Granddaughter of Henry Grundy BRATLEY (Brumpton).

You have made quite a lot of progress in figuring out the Bratley /Brumpton family - it is confusing!

What is your connection to HGB?

The following may clarify things.

Henry Grundy Bratley was the illegitimate son of Emma Brumpton (later Hurd/Hird).  He was born 14 Feb 1868 at KIDGATE, LOUTH.  His birth was registered as BRUMPTON.  I have an original  copy of his birth certificate issued in 1902.  We do not know the name of his father.

Emma Brumpton was the daughter of Mary Ann & William Brumpton.  Mary Ann's maiden name was Bratley.  Following William's death, Mary Ann married David Bratley.  [prepare yourself fo more confusion]  Not only was the groom called David Bratley, but the father's of both bride and groom were also David Bratley!

On the 1871 census Henry Grundy BRUMPTON was living in Binbrook in the household of David & Mary Ann BRATLEY where he and Caroline BRUMPTON & John William BRUMPTON were recorded as 'grandchildren'.  By 1881 all three children were still in this household but were then called BRATLEY and were listed as children of the head of the household - David BRATLEY.

When Henry Grundy BRATLEY married Frances (Fanny) Elizabeth HIRST in Sheffield in 1896 he gave his father's name as David BRATLEY (deceased) Grocer & Draper.  Henry G was now a Grocer & Draper himself and was running the shop in the market place in Binbrook.  They lived first in Binbrook but returned to Sheffield a few years later.

Caroline BRUMPTON/BRATLEY was also the daughter of Emma BRUMPTON and so Henry's half sister (or full sister if she shared the same father).  Caroline married a NATHANIAL BRATLEY.

John William BRUMPTON/BRATLEY married Fanny HIRST's sister.  John was not the son of Emma, but of Ann BRUMPTON and so I believe these men  cousins not brothers (unless they shared a father).  However, it was always said in the family that 'two brothers married two sisters' . So did they even know their own birth status?

I have much more on the family and we do have a photo of HGB, but that is probably enough for now!

Please do let me know what your interest in HGB is and I hope we will be able to share more info in future.

Karen

Hi Karen and thanks for responding!

My great grandma was Caroline BRUMPTON, born 1865 so as you say, Henry's elder sister/half-sister.  This is Caroline on FAG:

Do you know where Emma is buried? Are you on Ancestry or Family Search?

Cheers

Martin

Hi Martin

Delighted to hear from Caroline's side.

Yes Emma died in the Bracebridge Asylum 10 March 1912, but we have been unable to locate her grave.  She was most likely buried in the grounds. I have seen her medical records from her admission to and time in the asylum but some are missing.

The poor law records indicated that the Board of Guardians asked Caroline to contribute to her mother's upkeep when she was admitted but Caroline refused because she said her mother had £100 which was being held by a Mr Stocks.  When I last visited the archives (2012) the later correspondence was still closed so I could not follow that through.

Does your side of the family have any info on Emma?  We have not discovered what happened to her husband Thomas Hurd and despite extensive searches I have never been able to find Emma on the 1881 census.  Did they emigrate or hide from the authorities in some way? Did she maintain contact with Caroline up to her death in any way?  My sister is desperate to find a photo of Emma.

I can see that you have sent a direct message but I seem unable to reply to that thread.  I have not used this forum before, is there a means to communicate directly and then exchange documents if necessary?  I have been researching this for close to 40 years so I do have quite a lot of info.

I use both find my past and ancestry but have not uploaded my tree (long story).

I hope this is helpful.

Karen

Thanks Trish.

It seems this site has a few 'features' that are not obvious!
