YMCA building 101, Waterloo Roa Blyth Northumberland
« on: Saturday 12 December 20 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone I’m trying to find some history on YMCA building above.

Was it originally a house? Who lived there? When was it built? The Name Keenleyside has Ben mentioned elsewhere. Was it built for the YMCA?

Any help or advice of where to look would be appreciated!

Best wishes everyone!

Welcome to Rootschat

Have you contacted the local planning department who may be able to help.  They probably hold the records for the building showing change of use etc

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

It looks as though it may have been a care home until recently.

May I suggest you contact the below and ask if they can tell you anything about the history of the YMCA.

If they can't help then perhaps they can tell you who can.

In 1939 101 Waterloo Road, Blyth was certainly connected to YMCA - resident's occupation is  "Steward, YMCA" and he was also an ARP Warden

I can't readily see an entry on 1911 census for 101 Waterloo Road.  There is 100, 102 and 103, but no indication of 101.

A search of "101 Waterloo Road" in the newspapers shows The Blyth News has about 80 adverts between 1926 and 1938 for the sale of various breeds of poultry for egg laying.  All state "Apply Taylor, 101 Waterloo Road".  No mention of YMCA.

It had obviously changed occupants - 1939 gives Richard Page.

I have put a link to this thread on the Blyth History thread, also on this board, in the hope that some of the many local experts there might be able to help.
