No Death Certificate?

I wonder if anyone can help..

I'm struggling to find a death certificate/registry or burial record for an ancestor.

The last info we can find is in the 1851 census. I've done blank searches on deaths between 1851-1861, with just forenames then just surnames.

We've been able to find burial records for his wife and his daughter (who died before the census). They were buried in the same cemetery, and years after his death his son was buried there also. It's led me to believe this missing ancestor would have been buried there also but there's no note of anything.

I'm quite stumped I could find detailed data for previous years but when it comes to him... Nothing.

Can anyone suggest where to go from here?

if he died before 1855 when registration started, there won't be a death certificate.

Joseph Manders(t)on
b. 2 Aug 1787 Duns, Berwickshire
m. 17 July 1809 to Rachel Ferguson in Duns, Berwickshire

I know by the 1820's they relocated to Edinburgh, as the census in 1841&1851 indicates some of his children were born there and also one of his children was sent to the Royal Blind Asylum around 1825.

Rachel, his wife died in 1848 and I found a record of her burial. Coincidentally his daughter, Rachel Alexander (nee Manders(t)on) is on the same page of the burial register. We also found that the ancestor who was blind was also buried in the same cemetery but many years later.

Any ideas?

The closest thing I've found is a record pertaining to a Joseph Ferguson, with a Maiden Name Anderson. But it's probably wishful thinking that the names are possibly inputted wrong.

Daughter Alison married 1859 to John Moodie - is Joseph shown as deceased on her marriage cert?

I looked on Scotland's People at burials in the whole of Scotland for all the church denominations 1851-1854 for someone born up to 5 years either side of 1787, using the first name Joseph and not selecting a surname. There was no candidate, not even an Anderson, of the right age.

I did the same for the statutory death certificates from 1855 onwards for Edinburgh City and for Midlothian, but no candidate appeared.

I also checked the newspapers in Midlothian for Manders(t)on, but no reference to Joseph appears.

Yes, both parents are advised as deceased on Alison's death certificate.

Yeah I had done that and found nothing myself. There's a death for a Joseph Ferguson in 1855 with a mothers maiden name listed as "Anderson" but again I think it's wishful thinking that he may have been registered with his wife's name, and then for his actual name to be inputted into the mothers maiden name and incorrectly as well.. it would just be too good to be true wouldn't it?

I know on SP, especially for deaths, Parents/Other Details comes up for the OPR but for statutory deaths, it strictly says mothers maiden name...

Think I should just pay for it and see?

Apologies I had checked her death cert. I've checked her marriage cert now and can confirm by 1859 he was deceased.

Any ideas from here ??
