Kellys Land Bailleston, Lanark
« on: Thursday 19 November 20 16:19 GMT (UK) »
I have a relative whose birth certificate shows her place of birth as Kellys Land.  I can't seem to find any information on this place.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They don't seem to have that year, but more was wondering if there was a map showing where it was.

In this context a land is a tenement block, possibly a stair with two flats at each level and a communal green at the back. Very often a land is named after its proprietor, or sometimes after a prominent tenant.

The Valuation Rolls at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk list Kellys Land, Baillieston, Old Monkland from 1875 onwards. In 1875 there were six households, in 1885 there were ten and in 1895 there were eight.

One of those listed in both 1885 and 1895 was William Kirkwood. In 1875 there was an Edward Lafferty. I found both of those listed as heads of household in 1881 in Kelley Land, Old Monkland in Enumeration District 7.

The addresses in the ED are Douglas Land, Penders Row, Dyke Street*, Rhindsdale* Cottage, Faulds*, Fauldshill, Faulds Park*, Swinton*, Rhindsmuir* Cottage, The Rhinds*, Rhinds Lodge*, Rhin(d)s Houses, Mainhill Old School, Owens Houses Crosshill, Owen's Land Crosshill, Gillies Land Crosshill, McQueens Land Crosshill, Birrells Land Crosshill, Scotts Land Crosshill, Carswell Land Crosshill, Win(d)gates Land Crosshill, Crosshill Cottage, Hoggs Land Baillieston, Marshalls Land Baillieston, Waddells Land, Provanhall Co Land, Sparrow Row, Moss Bank Cottage, Thomson Land, Scotts Land, Fleming Land, Rhindsdale House, Rhindsdale Lodge, Hunter Land, Wilsons Land, Kelley Land, Provanhall Co Houses, Hoggs Land, Macks Land, Stirlings Land, Williams Land, and Rockvilla.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.85434&lon=-4.10568&layers=168&b=1 was surveyed in 1898 and shows some of the places named in ED 7 of Old Monkland, indicated by asterisks in the list above. However it doesn't name the individual Lands.

What I suggest is that you go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and look up in the 1891 census Johann Kirkwood, aged 16, reference Old Monkland 652/1 7/ 30. Alternatively look up your own family member, if (s)he was born after the 1881 and before the 1911 census, in the nearest census to the birth date. Once you have viewed the census page, you can view a detailed description of the ED by clicking on 'View Header' at top left above the image.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

My previous post crossed with the ones above it.

Only every tenth VR is available online so far, so you need to go for one either side of the date you are interested in. You can view the intervening VRs in the National Library of Scotland and various other places, but they are unlikely to tell you significantly more that the 1895 and 1905 together.

AHA!

The 1915 VR lists Kellys Land at 143 and 145 Main Street, Baillieston.

Comparing the map above with https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18&lat=55.85116&lon=-4.10961&layers=170&b=1 suggests that this was close to the corner where Dyke Street meets Main Street, and that Kellys Land had been demolished by 1955.

Thanks so much Forfarian.  I have the 1891 census which shows their address as: Baillieston & Broom Hous P Rd Muirhead Row, Old Monkland, Western District.   ED 8.  In 1901 address was Main St Red Land, Old Monkland Western District ED 7.  I don't know if it helps any, but her father was a coal miner.
