When I was right up to the memorial I could see that the inscription showed as '3 Enero 1900' and later googled to get translation of the month.  So I do believe this is the correct date.  A bit of a coincidence though that his vessel was called 'Enero' (January).

I think that sounds quite plausible for his cause of death.  Very unfortunate though  that he seems to have been much below the risk age when this occurred.  He might not have been able to be saved even if he knew he had a problem or even if he did get to a doctor in time - they might not have had the knowledge or the skill to help back then perhaps?  At least it sounds like his end was quick albeit quite alarming.  :o

Jen, that is tragic that your own Uncle died so young due to this .. awful to think that even in these modern times this can still happen.  :-\

I think it is quite touching perhaps that the inscription is in Spanish.  Perhaps given by his steward or someone from his vessel perhaps.  I think this shows that this was not a communication form to the English living in the area but a message of remembrance perhaps to his family or descendants who might seek to find him one day ...

Thanks so much that you will now try to send a message Josey.  :)

Very strange, I found Juan Amillaga Sanpelayo once, went to message the tree owner Miguel something but it reverted to my own messages. Doing another search for Juan I can't find him...I am persisting though.

Thank you Josie for persisting even though this is not proving easy .. well, they do say they will be found when they want to be found .. mind this usually relates to the dead and not the living ..  ;D

Hopefully, a connection might be made with Miguel soon.  Thanks lots for trying. :)

I had looked at the tree so dug the url for Juan's details from my browsing history if it helps.

I've been having difficulty with the messaging system this morning, but its just decided to play nice, though you never know how long that will last :).

Maybe if you try again it will let you send the message?

Boo

Thanks for helping with sorting things Boo and thanks Josey.  My!  You are clever to send a message in Spanish too!   :)

All thanks to U3A lessons  ;). I think you can see a tick when a message has been read. As Radcliff said, Miguel hadn't been online with ancestry for a year.

Well, it was a great idea of yours to communicate to him about this in his own langage.  Fortuitous that you took those lessons Josey. :)
Perhaps Miguel might have passed on too or he might come back and read this message one day.  I sometimes wonder if some people treat Ancestry like a gym membership?  They pay, feel good and then just forget about it and never use. ;D

Anyway, even if Miguel is never heard from I do appreciate your help and the posts from all on this thread.  I do feel it will be of help to some descendant one day. :)
