Hi all, I am looking at a Smellie Hamilton connection at the moment and came across these posts. I have an Elizabeth Grahame whose parents were James Graham and Margaret Smellie Gartshore. Margaret Smellie Gartshore diedin1883.She married Games Graham in 1857. Her parents were George Gartshore and Elizabeth Smellie. My connection to George and Elizabeth is through their daughter Jane Boak Gartshore 1826-1913. Jane married Thomas Aitken and after his death, married my 3rd gr grandfather, Peter Salmond 1820-1901. They brought Peter's grand-daughter Jessie Haddow to Australia in 1886 where she met and married an Angus fellow, Donald Macdonald 1863-1945. Their first daughter born in Australia was Jane Gartshore Macdonald. I had been told 'Gartshore' was given to my grandmother as her middle name after the midwife who delivered her, and her birth certificate states as such, however it was after a lot of searching of the Salmond connection that I discovered this second marriage and how she was actually my grandmother's step-gr grandmother as well as being the midwife who delivered her. Why I am researching Smellie, is that my Haddow line is through John Haddow and Elizabeth Hamilton, their son David, his son Thomas and then my gr grandmother Jessie Haddow who married Donald Macdonald. I have not been able to find Elizabeth Hamilton's marriage to John, nor her death. I know she died prior to 1855 as she is 'deceased' on David's death in 1855, however I believe I found her in an 1851 census living with Lilias Smellie and what appears to be her young son William Smellie. I believe Lilias was actually Lillias McKay and William is the son of James Smellie. I cannot find anything at all on James Smellie to see where the connection to Elizabeth Hamilton may be. Lillias' parents were Donald McKay and Lillias Mcdonald 1794-1861. Hope this helps somewhat with the Gartshore line.
