Black Tombstones outside Stirling Castle

In Researching my Allan ancestors, I have found a document that says "The Big Cemetery Outside Stirling Castle has several large black Allan tombstones......"  It is some considerable time since I was at Stirling Castle, but I cannot think of ANY cemetery in the near vicinity, never mind "Outside" the castle.  As far as my research goes, my Allan ancestors were farmers and came from Falkirk.  Does anyone have any information on this cemetery and the "black Allan tombstones" ?

Could it be the Old Town Cemetery which lies between The Castle and the Church of The Holy Rude? It dates back to Medieval Times and is a few minutes walk from the Castle.

Might be worth taking a look at this one.

Thanks for the fast response.  This does make sense as the writer that made the comment thought that these Allan's were servants in the castle.  Is there a way or a web site I can use to follow up on this ?  I live in Canada which combined with this Pandemic make life difficult.  Thanks again !

There are several cemeteries just outside Stirling castle - the biggest is probably Ballengeich. There was a web site memento-mori.co.uk which had lists of memorials in a number of Scottish cemeteries including those in Stirling, but this site seems to have disappeared - I dont know if this is just a temporary problem or not. There is an on-line index of burials in Stirling, https://data.stirling.gov.uk/dataset/cemetery-records/resource/e2c373ba-86b8-404c-8ff7-4d91cd9acb59
but this seems to be 20th century and you don't say how old the Allan memorials might be. A quick look didn't show up any in the cemeteries by the Castle.

There are some Allans listed in Ballengeich in Find A Grave and this site may be worth checking for the other Stirling cemeteries

When a web site disappears the first place to look is the Internet Archive - https://archive.org/
type or copy & paste the url into the Internet Archive and you will in most cases be presented with a graphic displaying the days that website was crawled over the years it existed.
Click on a date, then click on a time in the box that opens and view the site.

Memento Mori was the first place I tried for this query, and I couldn't  access it either.

Using the Wayback Machine I have been able to get at the list of names transcribed in the Holy Rude Kirkyard, and no Allans are listed. That may mean that MM had not yet done the whole of the kirkyard.

There is also a reference to a list of names in Holyrude Kirk, but that page has not been archived.

I wonder what has happened to Memento Mori?

Re. Memento Mori. The owner, and my friend Anne Anderson died unexpectedly last year.  As far as I can tell no-one has continued with it. Its a real shame. Anne was a dedicated helper, often giving out info. F.O.C.  She also performed hundreds of hours on Scottish Military Research.
