My Great Grandad, on two Census returns 1881 and 1891, called himself and his Wife GREEN.  This was his Grandmother's maiden name.  He did this to escape debt.  His place of birth was correct, but his Son and my Grandad, were living with them, with the correct Surname, but listed as Lodgers.  Both him and his Wife's death certificate gave their correct surname and the same address.

It all looks OK
I wonder if Mary Fear's mother Charlotte (Rainbird) who married William Fear might have remarried and so Mary Fear became Mary Dawson
The problem is I have seen the birth certificate for George Howe 1 July 1855 and it says the father is Baldwin Walter Howe  (railway pointsman) and mother Mary Fear    Shavington Cum Cresty  Cheshire
this is in contrast to the FreeReg information which I am thinking is a baptism record

GRO Index

HOWE, George - Mother's maiden name: FEAR

GRO Reference: 1855, S Quarter in NANTWICH Volume 08A, Page 270.  It took me some time to sort out my x Grandad called himself GREEN - people sometimes didn't want to be found.
