Saving an Ancestry family tree to memory stick

Apologies if this topic has been covered before. Can I save my family tree on Ancestry to a USB memory stick, I have almost 9,000 ancestors on there. I am using a Window 10 laptop is S mode.

As long as the stick has sufficient memory I can't see a problem

Go into Trees > Create and Manage Trees.

Select the Tree you want to export > Manage Tree

Select > Export Tree

Once it has been created you can Download the GEDCOM file and save it to your USB memory stick.

You will need specific software to be able to view it.

I have Roots Magic on my Computer and periodically I export a Gedcom file in Ancestry and load it in Roots Magic as my Backup.  This software also come with a Mobile version that runs on a USB memory stick.   There is a free version of Roots Magic available it is called Essentials and it does have limited functions but it is useful to check out your Gedcom file.

I already downloaded a Gedcom file for the Gedmatch website  couple of years ago, do i download a new one? I dont use any family history programmes like roots magic, I thought I could just save my tree to a usb stick. I am not very technical as you can tell.

If you have say a PDF file or a Word document file on your USB memory stick you cannot view them without software and the Gedcom file is the same, you need software that will recognise and open the file.

Ancestry Trees will not export as an Ancestry Tree, if they did Ancestry would soon loose a huge slice of their subscribers.

The creation of a Gedcom file is best undertaken as a routine process, every week or month depending upon how much new data you have added.

Don't forget that gedcom files, to the standard specification, DO NOT contain any media.     

Some "tree" software packages [ eg FTM ] can have options for other [ eg FTM-specific ]  "gedcom" files.     

You can view gedcoms in [ say ] Wordpad/Notepad/WORD/Excel

Far better than exporting a gedcom file I would setup RootsMagic and sync your data. Then once in RootsMagic you can save to a memory stick. The saved family tree will also include l your media files as well (unlike gedcom). If you ever loose your ancestry tree you can restore it from your memory stick. There is no initial cost to set this up. You can do it once for free. Once in rootsmagic you could take your laptop to a church etc and edit your family tree - once home you can connect your laptop to the internet and resync with ancestry (you need to pay for an upgrade of rootsmagic to do this).
