Whittingham admissions register - Lancashire Records office

Hi,

Is anyone going to the records office that would be willing to look up a patient being admitted to Whittingham Asylum?

Hi,

Im looking for any record relating to Thomas Henry Willis Meyer who was discharged from Liverpool Workhouse to Lancaster on 24 Sept 1917 or possibly the day before.

I do not know for certain that Whittingham was the place he was sent to but think that is the likely place. Sadly his sister Florence, whose records I have been to LRO for, was admitted there in 1910 and she died there on 22 Jun 1917 shortly before Thomas was sent to Lancaster area.

If you are going I would be grateful for your help as I cannot get there myself at this time but no worries if you cant, it will wait.

Andrea

Hi

Sorry - not going but wanted to check whether the date was in or out of the 100yr disclosure period

Don’t know how the new lock down rules will affect visits to centres but they do offer a search facility for an unnamed fee

I just looked at the workhouse record and it definitely says 'to Lancaster'

Given that I have recently seen a workhouse record from around that time where a lady was discharged and it says 'to Whittingham' and that has turned out to be correct. I would think that he was most likely actually sent to what was known as Lancaster Moor Hospital, later Lancaster County Mental Hospital.
The National Archives site says that admission records are held at Lancs Archives

Though if you check the 1939 register it would seem that he may have been admitted at some stage to Rainhill. Those records (which possibly would have his medical history included but I can't be certain) are held at Liverpool Record Office. I had copies of records for a patient at Rainhill earlier this year from LRO and the cost was £25. Not sure if the 100 year rule about access covers date of birth or date of record?
Until the world returns to some sort of normality archives will not be open or taking orders for records.

Hi Boo,

Thanks for that reply. Yes I guess Lancaster must be the place so I'll have to see where that takes me. Thomas did end up in Rainhill and died there. His grandson requested details and copies from Liverpool records Office some years ago but there wasn't no information to be found which is strange but then again not all records are kept.

Some of his family had no knowledge of his whereabouts or the fact that he was alive until 1962.

thanks for your input

Andi
