In 1881, Archibald Roden, aged 37 (c1844), born in Scotland, was living in Wigan, Lancashire.

He is a commercial traveller boarding in the household of Daniel Gibson, a draper from Scotland. That fits with the info about an Archibald Roden in this thread.

However, his marital status is given as unmarried.

Is his age stated on the marriage certificate?

Also, could you give us the info about Jessie Pearse from the certificate? Age, father's name and occupation ... and do the witnesses appear to be relations?

Looking for Jessie after 1876 could help find them, and this would provide info to help look for Archibald after 1876.

Or ... do you know all about Jessie already? and if so, would you give us that info too please? Date and place of birth, etc.

FindMyPast has two service records for what I suspect are the same person:
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/army-service-records-search.action

Archibald Roddan, dob 1855 Dumfries, Dumfriesshire
Archibald Roddan, dob 1855 Auchincruk, Dumfriesshire

It could be worth having a look at them, as I suspect that is your person.

The one in Lancashire I think must be a different person.

Although ... in 1881 there is Archibald Roddan, dob c1854, living in Dumfries with wife Susan, same age,  and 8-yr-old son Joseph. That looks like the person in the military record, and would seem to rule him out as the person in the Devon marriage.

Certainly is odd how the father James in the earlier censuses matches the details on the Devon marriage certificate ...

Maybe there really were two of them! It could be worth accessing the military records, to check.

Okay, 1871 in St Thomas, Devon

Jessie Pearse, aged 14, born Stoke, Plymouth

living on Alphington St with parents and siblings

Robert, 43, Mason, born Bampton
Ann, 38, born ? near Mary Tavy
Ellen, 24, born Tavistock
Sarah, 19, born Tavistock
Rebecca, 18, born Camborne Nr Tavistock
Emma Jane, 12, born Morice Town, Plymouth
Mary, 9, born ditto
Elizabeth, 7, born ditto
Edith, 4, born Ford Nr Plymouth
William Robert, 2, born St Thomas, Devon, Exeter

Reminds me of a family of mine; he kept trying and he finally got a son. ;)

I don't see a Jessie in 81 or 91 in England with the right surname or husband to be Jessie Pearse.

Since these are your direct ancestors, obviously you know who at least one of their children was -- name, date and place of birth ...

Have you not found that person in censuses with one or both parents?

It's always best to give all the info you have that nobody else knows.

Is Archibald not with his family in any census after 1876? If he is, then it will say something about his date and place of birth at least ...

"I have found that young Archibald called his first born Archibald after his dad then the names of the other children were James after Grandad then Doris Jessie , Mary ,Rose ,Blanche ,Margaret ,Philip ,Samuel ,Vernon then Violet ."

Doris Jessie was born in Devonport in 1905.

They married in 1876 and their second child was born in 1905??

Vernon and Violet were born in 1920 and 1923 in Birkenhead.

Okay, so we are talking about Archibald Jr; I had been confused.

Archibald George Roden married Mabel Florence Berry in Plymouth in 1904.

However, there is no birth for that name in England/Wales.

Alrighty.

1901 in Plymouth: Archibald Rodden, aged 25 (c1876), born Exeter, Devon, grandson, living with Ann Pearse (as in the 1871 census) and her son Samuel, 23.

In 1891 he appears as Archibald Pearse (Peare, per Ancestry), aged 15, living with grandmother Ann Pearse (mistranscribed by Ancestry as Pearce).

In 1881, mistranscribed by Ancestry as Boden, aged 6, living with Pearse grandparents in Exeter.

Birth: Archibald George Pearse, 1874, St Thomas

So he never lived with his parents, it seems.

If you have any info about them after their 1876 marriage ... I'm suspecting they left the country?
