Help Cant find David Goban before 1873
« on: Friday 26 August 05 11:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find any information about my GGrandfather David Goben or Goban before 1873, I can find no record of who his Mother was and he was born out of Wedlock so I don't know who his Father was.

Family rumour from two sources says that his Mother was a servant to a Scottish Laird and David's Father was the son of that Laird, apparently they wanted to Marry but were not permitted to and the Son was said to have emigrated to America.

When the laird died apparently his will was challenged in an English court and some settlement was made.

I know he married in 1873 at middlewich St Michaels and all Angels
I have census records for 1981 and 1991, all show he lived in Runcorn.
He died in runcorn in 1905
he was born in Middlewich or Winsford according to the census sheets and Marriage Certificate
All records show that he was a boatman.
He was born in early 1850, I think about 1853

I have been searching for a long time now and have had no success, I would appreciate any help or advice on how to find the information I am looking for.

Hi I wonder if this could be your man in 1871
RG10/3742 Wirral Eastham, Vessel - Bee (1) Folio 48
David Gobern Married 19 Captain Cheshire Birkenhead
John Cardell Unmarried 17 Mate Staffordshire Silverdale

Despite being "married" and birthplace different, it's a great coincidence that he is on a boat.

Sorry, not had any luck with the 1861 census nor birth or any earlier marriages online.  Have you tried www.1837online.com which has all the indexes and should list David's birth, although it's a pay site at around £5 for about 50 scans.

Hope this may have helped a bit.

As an aside;
There is an explanation on Freebmd regarding how few records have been transcribed in the early 1860's, due to the extra cost of processing/scanning/storing them. BMDINDEX can work out cheaper for looking at scans, it depends on how many you think you will need.

What about additional information  on the marriage certificate that you haven't given? ages, any addtional (middle) names for the groom, names of witnesses and the like.

Many thanks for looking.

Yes I have tried 1837 online but no luck, I have also looked at the vessel Bee,  but the person I am looking for was a Bachelor  according to his marriage certificate

The only other information from his Marriage certificate is that he was a Bachelor aged 20 at the time of marriage and the witnesses were Jane Trelfa ( Brides Sister) and Danial Bailey

Don't always believe everything, even on certificates, I always keep an open mind, and often ask myself who might have given the information to the census enumerator, or could he even had made a mistake?  However, there are major discrepancies about the David on the Bee as well as coincidences so it is doubtful, however, trying to trace that particular David in other censuses hasn't proved successful either, which made me think it might be him.

Nor have I been able to find a Daniel/Danial Bailey in the vicinity of the Trelfa's and strangely enough there is a sad lack of Davids in the area too.

The only other thoughts I have are that maybe he was actually born and registered in Scotland and brought to England/Cheshire at a very young age so that he may not have even known that he was born there, so the birth records there might be worth investigating.  I would also suggest that you speak again to the two family sources and ask them to think harder about a name of this laird or whereabouts in Scotland it was and perhaps follow that avenue.  I don't know very much about the censuses or information available in Scotland but maybe his mother was working there in 1851 and could be traced that way, or if you were interested enough in the possible father, then if you had a name maybe immigration records could help.

Hope I've given you one or two thoughts even though no facts, sorry.

Hi Pete

It seemed to me that we have to be looking for a David (surname not known)born 1850-1855 Middlewich/Winsford/Over areas, so I did a search of all Davids born in that period and by process of elimination useing the Cheshire BMD and various census indexes I have come up with this theory, you need a good imagination for this one.

1851 Winsford a Sarah Goulborn gave birth to David Goulborn

1854 Sarah Golbourn married Joseph Davies

1861 census RG9-2607-F160  Queen Street Middlewich

Joseph Davies head 35 salt boiler Middlewich
Sarah              wife 26                   Over
David               son 10                   Winsford
Joseph                   3                      Middlewich
Samuel                  1

1871 census show the same family minus David (cannot find him at the moment)

1881 census shows David Goben wife Ann and daug Frances in Runcorn

1891 census is where I think the connection is made with Samuel Davies

RG12 2831-F155  Spring Gardens Runcorn

David Goben head 40 boatman Middlewich
Ann               wife 32                     ~
Frances         daug 13
Peter             son 9                   Runcorn
Mary E           daug 6
Joseph          son 2
Samuel Davies lodger 30 boatman Middlewich

If you use the http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/  you will find that David died in 1895 not 1905

hope this may prove to be of help

Thank you very Much Peter, MaryA and PaulineJ.

That makes a lot of sense to me and has turned out much like I thought it would.

I expected that David's Mother would have Married and have a different name but I don't think I would have found it without your help.

I will now send for the Birth certificate and see what tells me.
