 Gadget, I think you are right about something after CHRIS, I think it could be another word. I have tried all ways to make it clearer but I can't. It's hard to say where the writing is from, as you say if there is a card backing to this photo it's hardly likely to be from there.

The best that I can come up with is a transfer from another piece of paper with wettish ink on it. If it was put on top of the photo, it would transfer to the print surface

I think that it's copy and someone has written on the back of it, as the writing is reversed, or, they have re-used paper.

Re date - most of the photos I have in my books, date that type of outfit, especially neckware,  as 1870s. I originally thought maybe 1880s but have just had another look through .

I had the same thoughts but I could only find the photographer with that same writing on and no address as 1880s but 1870s seems more likely
