A Jeremiah MALONEY is recorded as being a patient and an elastic weaver on the West Humberstone Municipal Ward, aged 29 born 1872. Is this my Jeremiah and does it explain why hbe is not living with Ellen and his children?https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBC%2F1901%2F0020047503

Following the link you give, there are no names on that page - only initials are given. The only elastic weavers on that page are 'J S ' aged 29 and 'W T' aged 28. Both are single.

You are right.  The Jeremiah Maloney I have found late yesterday was born in Leicester, not Northampton, so I think I am now looking at the possibility that Jeremiah and James are the same person.

Obviously, I still have the photo of Jeremiah I have been given by my relative. I have been advised that the badge on his turban is that of the Northamptonshire Regiment.  This fits with the army service record details from 1902, between the above two census returns, that I have found for Jeremiah Maloney, service number 6568. 

I have taken another look at this, to see if anything fits with the two census returns above.  I am unable to read the address of residence or the employer name but the age and town of residence are a good fit.  The form seems to indicate this man has served in the military before but I don't understand what Reg by purchase means.

Will keep thinking on this.

The address on the 1902 attestation is 30 Cloutsham Street, Northampton. He's not there on the 1901 census.

I also note that he had previously served in the 4th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment, and had bought himself out.

In September 1902 there is a note that he was discharged in South Africa.

The 1902 employer is written as Mr ?oballs - possibly this is Thomas Nobles, bootmaker, 18 Palmerston Road, Northampton.
