You are right. The Jeremiah Maloney I have found late yesterday was born in Leicester, not Northampton, so I think I am now looking at the possibility that Jeremiah and James are the same person.

Obviously, I still have the photo of Jeremiah I have been given by my relative. I have been advised that the badge on his turban is that of the Northamptonshire Regiment. This fits with the army service record details from 1902, between the above two census returns, that I have found for Jeremiah Maloney, service number 6568.
I have taken another look at this, to see if anything fits with the two census returns above. I am unable to read the address of residence or the employer name but the age and town of residence are a good fit. The form seems to indicate this man has served in the military before but I don't understand what Reg by purchase means.
Will keep thinking on this.
