Is this my grandfather and mother c.1934/5 West Yorkshire
« on: Sunday 20 September 20 15:43 BST (UK) »
Hi, looking to date this photo. It is tiny, actual image bit bigger than a passport photo.  I think it could be my Grandfather 1886-1944 and my mother, or her sister.  Mum was born 1933 but she had a sister born 1928 who died at age 18 months from congenital heart disease and malformation of the heart.  Location unknown but probably somewhere on the outskirts of Bradford.  My grandparents were not well off and the clothing could be dated, second hand and the outfit the child is in could have been made by my grandmother who was an excellent seamstress. Many thanks.
Yorkshire - England, Holmes, Brumfitt, Walker, Staves,
Sussex - Hicks, Perren, Veness, Dicker
Hampshire - Hicks, Bacon
Cornwall - Hicks

Dating I leave to the experts, but its such a nice photo that I couldn't resist a (not too) radical clean up.

Have we a dry-stone walling expert? I am not but it looks like a Northern Wall.

Date wise I don’t know that there is much fashion wise to determine if this little cherub is your mother or her sister.

I initially thought the little boots might be earlier and indicate it was the sister but they could be hand me down shoes anyway as you say the family were not wealthy.

The little girl looks very well turned out though.

Maybe one of the dating experts will spot something to help.

Do you have any photos of your mother as a young child for comparison?

Age wise I think she could be 14 to 18 months, though I am not confident with that estimate. Grandad could be in his 30s or 40s. I am not confident about that either.  :)

I am thinking a child with congenital heart condition as severe as 'malformation' would not look very healthy. At the very least they would look blue in the lips.   And at 18 months would probably not be as large as this child?

Also, her fingers look normal, not clubbed which they might if very cyanotic

So I would favour it being your mother.

Good points Mckha. Might it depend on what sort of congenital heart disease she had as to how it manifested itself appearance wise? But you are right - this child appears quite bonny. Neither Dad or child look very happy - not sure that anything can be read into that though.  :)

Also, she was likely to be "failing" for some months prior to decease at 18 mths, so why would you take her out into the breezy country side for a photograph?
