Hi Rootschatters

My late father attended Carrickmacross Grammar School, County Monaghan from about 1923 - 1928.

If I have the right school, I understand it might also have been known as the Viscount Weymouth Grammar School (for Catholic Boys).

I understand the school was demolished many years ago (maybe around the 1950s) but wondered if anyone has any pictures of it during its heyday .... or any past pupil records, or other interesting materials/stories about the school during the particular period that my father would have attended.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Maybe this is a photograph of the Grammar school. Google is your friend...

A free grammar school was founded here by Lord Weymouth in 1711, and endowed with £70 per annum....

OP,

If you want to know where it was in Carrickmacross, have a look at stop 9 in this leaflet. The school was demolished in 1955.

Hi Kiltaglassan

Thank you so much for those fantastic pictures and materials!  I tried to look for a picture of the school on Google but just couldn't get one.

That's a great picture, complete with a rather ghostly-looking schoolboy in the background ..... ;D

My Dad used to get into quite a lot of trouble with the priests there - he was a bit of a tearaway as youngster, but he got a great education from the school and quite enjoyed his time there.

Lots to explore there.  Very much appreciated.

You're very welcome  ;D

Here's the GeoHive Historic Map 25 inch (1888-1913) showing the 'Grammar School' entrance off Main Street and close to the corner with Bath Street.

...and here's Google Street View showing the carpark which now stands on it.

Hi Runner55 Some info on the School that may be of benefit.
Founded in 1703 by Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth(ancestor of the Marquis of Bath).
Charter granted in 1711. Purpose to provide an education for the sons of his tenants. Initially a Boarding school it attracted pupils from all over Ireland & from abroad. Day boys were admitted, many of whom were catholics. In 1884 it became a co-ed school admitting girls under a new headmaster, the Rev. Mr Thomas Troughton. Between 1923  and 1925 the headmaster was the Rev. L.W.H.Dickson. He was succeeded as Head by Harold Robert Meacock in 1925.He retired at the end of the 1955-6 school year, The school closed and was sold to a local co-op. Demolished circa 1979 and replaced by retail outlets and a carpark. See Letters from Past Pupils in the Clogher Record2016-17 & 2018-19 available online from JSTOR or from The Clogher Hist.Soc.St Macartan's College,Monaghan.  e-mail: (*)      Cheers.
