Didn't you check freebmd for a birth for him?  There is one in Hastings in 1883

Go to https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp and use the details from the freebmd entry to get his mothers maiden name which is shown as Foord

Use freebmd to look for a Moon marriage to a Foord & you will find one in 1877 so you have his parents - Henry & Sarah

Check freebmd for a death for Sarah - look at 1889

Hastings and St Leonards Observer 02 February 1889

This has a report of "a woman called Moon, living in All-Saints Street, who was very severely burnt by the exploding of a paraffin lamp". It says she was admitted to hospital; the poor woman must have lived a while with her injuries   :-[

I found a report in the Hastings and St. Leonard’s Observer of 14 Jan 1882 for a fire at Vine’s Row, Hastings about Sarah Jane Moon testifying about the death from burns of her daughter, 15 months old, named Alice.  Sarah was the wife of H.T. Moon, a painter.  Present at the time, on Jan 1, was her three year old son.   Sarah left the room for about 5 minutes and came back to find the child’s clothes smouldering.  The child died on January 11.  Death ruled accidental.
Perhaps some connection.

A Sarah Jane Moon age 32 listed in FreeBMD, died Mar Q, 1889 Hastings. Very sad.
