Who did he marry?

You say "reputedly born in Newcastle"  Is he on any census confirming his birthplace?

Hi CaroleW, on the 1881 Census he is down as born in Scotland, but his family say it was Newcastle, his Son Benjamin was born in Newcastle in 1851. His wife is named as Annie born 1816, but that must surely be wrong, either that or the marriage wasn't in 1825.

Benjamin  Gilbank's birth  registered in 1850 on the GRO index. Only one L in the surname
GILBANKS, BENJAMIN    mother's maiden name REID
GRO Reference: 1850  Sept 1/4 Quarter in PENRITH UNION  Volume 25  Page 153
But Penrith Union is in Cumberland.

Added
Annie is aged 60 on the 1881 census so born c 1821. She is 17 years younger than her husband.

William's birthplace is shown as "do" and the previous entry states "unk" = unknown

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Not sure about the 1861/1871 Census now as that Benjamin may have married as Killbanks 1871 Northumberland.
