Sunderland Ship Owner 1880`s

HI all, I have been researching some family history for a friend and one of his relatives was a Henry David Dennis born in Great Yarmouth in 1851. He moved with his parents to Sunderland a few years later. His father was a master mariner, James Davey Dennis.  I have located many of his voyages via the excellent Crews list database, http://www.crewlist.org.uk/  Henry D Dennis is logged as a ship broker in the 1881 census and lived at 2 Ash Place, off Newcastle Road in Sunderland but also had his business premises at the Exchange Buildings on 195 High Street East in Sunderland. He then moved back to Norfolk around 1891. I have located 2 ships he was the owner off, The San Jose, ships number 29951 and the Resolute, ships number 62539. I have searched all over but have been unable to find any more information about any other ships Henry owned or even the name of his company.  Is anyone able to provide more information or guide me to where I might locate said info.  Many thanks for any help you can give in this matter.

There is a death notice in the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 13 June 1899, for Henry D. Dennis, age 48, who died on the 11th. at 190 Hawthorne Avenue, Hull, from influenza. Late of Great Yarmouth and Sunderland.

The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 13 December 1889, reports the "Bromsgrove" the "Fair City" and the "Henry Brand" as coasters for H.D. Dennis

The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 16 May 1890, reports on two coasters for H.D. Dennis, the "John Lee" and the "Henry Brand"

The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 22 May 1890, reports the "Resolute" the "T.M.P." and the "Henry Brand" coasters for H.D. Dennis.

Thanks for that info Stan.  I think I`ll have to join the Sunderland Daily Echo and shipping gazette myself.  Does that newspaper cover shipping to and from Hartlepool and Middlesbrough as well? I have 2 of my own ancestors who were Master Mariners who worked from those areas as well as Sunderland. They were both born in Monkwearmouth.

Thanks very much Stan and Westoe. I`ve poured over that website a lot over the last few weeks and it is certainly a mine of information. Very good when you consider that the owner lives in Canada and states they have never been to Sunderland.  In regards to the ship `San Jose` it was owned by H D Dennis and captained by his dad, James Davey Dennis. He took it to Lagos in 1888 and died there of fever along with many of his shipmates. Must have come as a great shock to his son.

You will have to join either https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ or https://www.findmypast.co.uk/ to access the archive of the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette. Although you can see  some details without subscribing at the british newspaper archive

Hi Stan,
I took your advice and joined find my past as I have heard previously it is good for finding maritime information and has the added bonus of searching through newspapers as you rightly said. I found extra info on HD Dennis plus some of the comings and goings of my gt gt grandad from West Hartlepool
