Going Through The Box of Old Washburn Family Photos
« on: Wednesday 19 August 20 17:36 BST (UK) »
Cheery Hello!

As I am making my way through the box of old family photos, I happened upon this photo of this brother and sister.  I tried to lighten it but I had little luck.  I would love your help with this cute little photo.

Thanks ever so much!

Also - Please take a look at the photo of the little girl which is photo 3 in this message. I have inserted this jpeg photo into a word document adding the writing from the back of the photo and framing it with a black border.  When I do a snip-it of the photo from the word document saving it as a jpeg,  the resolution is  49 kb. This size is too small to reproduce as a 8 x 10 photo and too small to add to an online family book that I might to produce to give to my extended family.  Any ideas on how I can get this look without losing the resolution?  Thanks for your help. Your expertise is truly appreciated!

I printed the little girl Frederica Washburn on a full A4 sheet of ordinary paper and it prints

   beautifully

The photo is actually 1.3 mb

Printed on good quality paper with a good printer and you will have a picture to be

proud of Carole.  P.S the aspect ratio would give a print of 6.33 inches wide x 10 inches.

I didn't print the picture of the girl, but just pasted it into a publishing program and it was 5.5 inches by 9. Try using the original picture (the one posted here) and you should have better luck.

As for the other picture, I tried to lighten it, too, but didn't have much luck. I'll post it anyway.  :)

Hi Carole, if you had a go at lightening it then can I presume you are OK with Cut, Copy and Paste.
Here's my attempt to lighten the couple.  All Tools look at the whole picture and there is way too much near blackness so I removed it and Hey Presto! ... it's much easier to ... well, it's a case of 'Stand back and let your mother see the rabbit, as my old dad would say, if he was still alive '.
Of course, now you know this you can do it yourself.  Simply run the select pointer around the figures as close as you can ( easier if you X 300 first) and while they are selected apply you choice of Lightening'.  I use LEVELS and first choose Auto to see the results, if not good enough, I Reset it and play with the sliders to both Lighten the lights and Darken the darks until I'm satisfied with the results.

I magnified pic 3 by 200% and it looked fine but clearly showed 'scratches' in the background. Clone Stamp Tool hid them.  I magnified by 300% and some pixellation appeared around the caption at the bottom which I tidied up a wee bit, and under her left cheek / chin their was some shade separation so I Clone Stamped it away too.
There was still colour info in your pic to which I applied Black & White effect, then used Level tool to improve the definition and Saved As a *.png file and I think it would Print well on Glossy Photo Portrait paper.
If you have the original, scan it again and save as TIFF or PNG until you have finished 'Improving it' and only then change the file format to Jpg or Jpeg but only if you need to Reduce the File size as Compression losses diminish the quality of the end result.
Cheers, Ian
