Plumb, David b~1806 boot & shoemaker

Dr. Williams and his library always makes me a bit nervous!

I must have done something very wrong previously because I have now found a heap of baptisms in Leyton to William and Mary Plumb. Sadly there is no David.

Thanks for all the info some of which I knew and some new. I will follow up the Leytonstone connection as it is fairly close to Stepney / MEOT.

James Stratton was killed in a train accident in Kent in 1862 and the newspaper reports of the inquest make interesting reading with the cause due to largely "lack of maintenance" so nothing new there!

Have you already seen the James Plumb bc.1808 -bootmaker- living in Oxford Street, Stepney (around the same time that David was in the area)?    Oxford Street ran through Jubilee Street, and alongside Clark Street.

By 1851 James has moved to a different street in the area.  On the census he claims to have been born in Sibly Headingley, Essex

Plumb families are fairly widespread across north Essex [includes Sible Hedingham], south Suffolk and south Cambridge.

I need do some more searching to see if I can find David's baptism and hopefully his father's occupation which may then connect him to James.

I came across a couple, James and Rosanna (same name as one of David’s daughters) Plumb, living in Sible Headingham who married in 1793.

Frustratingly, I can’t find the records for the Sible Headingham baptist church. They’re not on the Essex Archives site.  So no record of any baptisms for their children.

"My" David and Maria Susannah had 8 children including 2 females but sadly neither survived and didnt include a Rosanna. I therefore assume you are referring to a different family.

A check of the images of the 1841 census for Sible Hedingham did not reveal any Plumb / Bootmakers so maybe they had moved to the Stepney area.

I think the James / bootmaker / Sible Hedingham is an avenue to pursue for further research.

I thought they had 11 children!  Maybe not, but the GRO shows Plumb children born after 1837 in Stepney with mother’s maiden name Andrews as:

The Mary Ann Plumb burial address is in Holborn, so she was probably the one baptised there in 1846.

Do you use the GRO Index site?  It’s very helpful as it gives the mother’s maiden name, so we can see that Rosanna, Charlotte and David Benoni  all had the mother’s maiden name of Andrews.  I haven’t found a baptism for them though.   Nor a death for Charlotte.
