Harry Holland world war one records
« on: Thursday 13 August 20 18:55 BST (UK) »
Looking for world war one records for Harry Holland. Born in Bolton Lancashire in 1896, father John Holland, mother ellen nee crowshaw. 1911 census he was 15/16 Pemberton, working underground in a coal mine. Harry married Sarah Alice Noonan in 1917 at Wigan. It has just come to our attention that he was in the army, but we do not know his army number or regiment. Apparently he never spoke about it, so looking for any records or information. At some point he was injured, not sure if it was a bullet wound or shrapnel. He was in hospital because of his injuries, don't know when or where. This info has come from his 90 year old son, but he can't remember. Thanks

Do you have his marriage certificate? If he was already in the Army it may show his number and  Unit which would help in your search.

I can't see any obvious records for him, so they may not have survived. Up to 70% of the records were lost in WW2.

There are quite a few Harry HOLLAND who received the Silver War Badge, but there is nothing to indicate if one was for him.

Hi, nothing on the marriage certificate in 1917, but he could have been injured before he got married and left the army. Would he have got a army pension and would there be any records or any info or any medals? Thank you very much

Again, without an Army number or unit there would be no way to distinguish any medal entitlement for him from others with the same name.

I may be wrong, someone may correct me, but I doubt he would have had a pension unless his injury was such that would be unable to work.

I’m sorry, it not much help.  :(

The marriage record gives his occupation as Collier so his injury did not prevent him from working at his previous occupation.
Same occupation in 1939.

Thank you for your input. Does it say where Harry Holland is in 1939? Please

Bentley with Arksey, Yorkshire (West Riding).

Did he die in Lincolnshire 1945?

Harry died 1976 in Doncaster, he had been living at 5 Hall Villa Lane, Toll Bar, Doncaster. Date of birth 25th February 1896,  born little lever, Lancashire, registration Bolton. In 1911 he was a lasher on below ground living at Little Lever, would there have been any records of him working at a mine, showing when he started down the mine and when he left the mine?
Thanks
