Good timeline you have there for Hector. Just adding two more items (which you likely already have!):

1922 Naturalization records www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:45G3-LVT2
1930 US Census www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X794-NW4

Do Scottish death certificates state whether someone was a widow when they died.  :-\

If his wife died in 1967 and her death has her as 'Wife of Hector' does that mean he was still alive then but dead before his mother passed away in 1970.

Rosie
Were you just listening to my telephone conversation 1/2 hr ago with Hectors Grand son - that's just the question I have asked - he's off looking to see if he has the cert or if we need to get a copy.
I shall let you know

Yes. The marital status of the deceased is always shown, and from 1860 onwards the name(s) of any spouses, living or dead, assuming of course that whoever registered the death knew about all the spouses, which is not always the case.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Yes thank you again Don.

The chap I am helping is Hectors Grand son.
He was born 1960 and remembers his Granny but does not recall ever having met nor knew his Grand dad which is why it is thought he was estranged from his family and they now wonder where he was, where he died and where he may be buried  - hence my initiation of this thread.
So your help and that of the others suggests he was still alive when Granny died 6 March 1967 in Dumbarton where she is buried.
This is great progress
Thank you
