Hi there,

Your common ancestor will be Moses' father, Robert Cherry.

Robert married twice and Mary, a daughter from his second marriage, came to New Zealand as an assisted immigrant in 1868. She and her husband had 12 children but only a few married and went on to have children.

Do you happen to know the name of Moses' mother? Mary's mother was Jane.

Regards
Robyn  :)

I think this family might have been related to a Cherry family who ended up in Scotland, in the village of Thornliebank, parish of Eastwood, in Renfrewshire. I only know about them because I had Petticrew ancestors from Belfast who came over to Scotland in the 1830s and settled in Hawick. In the 1861 census Daniel Petticrew - brother of my ancestor Agnes - wasn't at home in Hawick and I eventually found him living with a family called Cherry in Eastwood, and described as "visitor". I discovered that the father/husband of the family, Hugh Cherry, master shoemaker, had recently died and maybe Daniel had known him or even been related and had gone to Eastwood for the funeral.

Hugh's death-certificate states that he was 50 and the son of Moses Cherry, farmer, and Ann Hamilton. He was married to Elizabeth Murray and in 1861 their children were Ann, Grace, Elizabeth, Moses and Margaret.

Ros Davies's surnames of Co. Down site has an entry for Hugh Cherry and Elizabeth Murray, who were married in 1836 at Killinchy. Daniel Petticrew's mother was a Jane Murray and his wife was Abigail Hamilton.

Thanks for that.

Certainly worth delving into. It may be that Hugh's father, Moses was Robert's brother  :)

I have a Cherry/Shannon connection in Limavady. Any Shannon or Limavady connections to this Cherry thread?

Cheers

Hi CherryFamily20

Have only just seen your posts.

Hi

No he's not a Cherry. Mary Cherry came from Ireland in the 1800s to NZ and married a man called Chatfield. My father-in-law's mother was a Chatfield.

His name is Cedric Taylor
