My favourite name is Euans .He was born very early and was not expected to survive .When he was named Fleur put Zachariah in as it means' God has remembered' .
Malachi had to have something distinctive as his surname is Brown.

Spike, really curious now, what's your real name?

Ahhh!! Lindsay I see you have "twigged", if I were to tell you that, I might have to kill myself. :-[

Let it be enough to say, I have been Spike for as long as I care to remember.

It is one thing to belittle yourself, but to belittle a child who is entitled to your care is absolutely unforgiveable.

A very interesting thread, it has kept me busy for a time reading through it all. My eldest has the first name of Donna (which was popular when she was born) and as it happens has the first three letters of my name and the whole of her mothers name spelt backwards (Don & Ann) which was pointed out by one of her "new" aunt's at the time. She has named all of her children with unrelated names to the family as she did not want someone saying that she had named a child after them. I was given my fathers name and for years when ever we visited Scottish relations it was always big Donald and wee Donald. My father died in 1991 but I am still known by some in my family as wee Donald (In truth I think that I would miss being called this even though I am now in my early 50's).

Our youngest is Cameron James and was picked only when we had been asked by the midwife what his name was so that she could fill in his birth record form moments after his birth. HE was going to be a SHE or so we thought and we had really only picked a girls name (Jessica Elizabeth) but as soon as we looked at him he straight away became Cameron James.

Hi, my name initially had nothing to do with family history, although I have found 2 or 3 Anna's since on both of my grandfathers and one of my grandmother's lines but I thank my lucky stars I wasn't born a boy as I would have been either John Richard or Richard John I can't remember which, my Kennedy line (which is my surname) bought an unusual firstname line to light when my dad dabbled in a little bit of familyhistory in the 50's when he was in his teens, from the furthest back I know of the direct Kennedy males are as thus

John

David

Richard

David

John

David

John James

David

so if I had been Richard John my sister would have been John Richard making our first names way too similar in my view.

Thank you Colette,

It's proof that persistence can sometimes overcome lack of talent or education, I have neither. :D

It was traditional for my uncles family to name the first son Sam.The day came when there was Grandad Sam,son Sam and then son of Sam ??? They solved the problem by calling themselves burnt, medium and rare Sam!! ;D
I have 2 children.Thomas William...named Tom because we liked the name and William after Granfathers on both sides.
My daughter is Emily-Grace .Grace after an elderly aunt now in her 90's who could never have children. She would always have a smile from ear to ear...and the name Grace makes me feel all warm inside.....my little Emily Grace is also a great smiler!!
Since tracing back the family I have found that there are hundreds of Thomas's and Williams!!! 8)
It seems customary for kids now to abreviate their names to just initials...ie. Tom is called TW and Emily-Grace is known as M. ;D

I agree with Happyhunter and wish that more people had used mother's maiden name as a middle name.

I am Ellen (after Court grandmother) and Margaret, after my maternal, Bennett, grandmother.  She was actually registered and baptised "Maggie" but my parents thought I might not thank them for that!

Our daughters are Elizabeth Clare (called Clare) mostly because we like the name but also husband's grandmother was Clara; and Frances (coincidentally husband's other grandmother) Ellen, to keep it going.

Our grandaughter has the middle name Brooke which is to feminise the Brooks which my husband and his father were given as middle names after the aforesaid Frances Brooks.

Our grandson's middle name is Robert after his grandfather g-gfather and g-g-gfather!
