I called my daughter Charlene Marie and my son Daniel Mark, none of those names appear in my side as I'm dutch descent. My son was going to be called Phillip John Alexander of which John Alexander is carried on on his father's side but we split up when I was 4 months preggies so I changed it to what I liked.

My daughter has called her daughter Natascha (Russian spelling) Jannigje (Dutch), her middle name  means Jane in english, she is pregnant with her 2nd one and is hoping to continue the Alexandra or Alexander tradition on from my side, it's my middle name and my uncle's first name but it was not a name that has been passed on. Most common names were Anton or Heinrich and
Gertruida or Gertrude. I sometimes think my g daughter should've been called Gertrude as my daughter keeps calling her that.

My cousin has just had a daughter and called her Esther and her son is called Sander, dunno how they came up with those names.

As a BMD transcriber I sometimes wonder what parents are thinking of.

Henry Rose (Surname)
Harold Coronation (Surname)
And what Horatio Nelson (Surname) thought of his name heaven alone knows.

No Heathcliffe's as yet though.  I live in hope.

With a surname like Tymon, I always liked the idea of having two sons called Simon and Wyman!   ;) But I had two girls and called them Emma and Lucy instead!   I have a Leo St. Xavier Tymon in my tree!  ???  They changed his name to Harry before he was 2.

Wow, this has proven to be quite a popular thread. I'm so pleased with the amount of responses I've had!!

I've recently changed my mind concerning names which I would give to my children (give it a few more years...:P):

Favourites for Girls: Lily, Rosina, Mina & Isabella.
Favourites for Boys: Theo, George, Thomas, Luke & Evan (middle names for boys would be Ryan, Jon/John or David).

We had a tradition going in my family for a few generations.  My great-great grandmother was Mina (Actually Almina but ALWAYS called Mina), she named her dau. Leta who in turn named her dau. Mina who in turn named her dau. Leta.  That last one is in my generation, born in 1930's and she did Not name her dau. Mina as she should have to keep it going.  Seems in the mid 1900's people became less interested in tradition and family.  My gggd-father was Enoch and one of his son's (Named Solon another family name) in turn named His son Enoch.  I would have named my son that if I'd ever had one.  I like old fashioned names or very English ones.  A girl would have been Bronwyn Meghan Elizabeth.  I have a friend here who only came from London 2 years ago to marry a local lady and he has said he wants their first girl also to be Bronwyn.  I have also seen it spelled Bronwin but he and I both like it w/the y.  Their son is called Owen Antony, not Anthony.    I find I have a lot of trouble in my searches 'cause so often  the same common first name was given to sons by several brothers who wanted to honer their father.  So Which David Hill,John Jenkins, is Mine?  Keeping the generations stright w/names like that is hard too.    A question here.  On my birth cert. I have a middle name, on my bapt. cert I have the middle name And a saint's name, is the Saint's name on the bapt. cert. part of my Legal name or is legal name only what is on birth cert.?

I've just found out that my gggg grandmother had a brother called Horatio Nelson Trafalgar Hope.  He was born around 1807 in Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland.

Would love to hear from anyone with any information.  I have details of his sister Wilhelmina's line and haven't come across another Horatio in the family.

Anges Weild - Annan - married William Blenkinsop - Annan
Jane Scott, Roxborough who married William Hope (children, Wilhelmina Amelia, Horatio Nelson Trafalga Hope!)
James Blenkinsop (born Dumfries)
James Blenkinsop (born Lancashire)
Wilhelmina Blenkisop (born Surrey) married Arthur Price (Wales)
Henry Reginald Price (Brecon, South Wales)
Evans (Coelbren, Wales)

Hi Caroline

What a great name for your ancestor - commemorating the battle of Trafalgar in two ways (and you might find you can shove his date of birth back a year or so to 1805/1806, to co-incide with the battle!)

cheers

Paul
