I do love this topic, as I love names. My family is chockful of Williams, Marys, Margarets, Thomases, Jameses, and we have a bunch of Leos thrown in for good measure.

My husband is Jewish and the Jewish tradition is to use at least the first letter of someone who has passed away. I like the idea of a name having family meaning, so my son was to get the middle name of my husband's paternal grandfather. I argued for the first name to be Irish, to represent my background, so he was dubbed Liam Murray (which made my dad happy, thinking he was named after him--William). When my daughter came along I didn't think I would get my Irish name, as I wanted the middle name to be after my maternal grandmother. Alas, I didn't like any name that went with Marian, so I got my little Molly, and used Mae as a middle name, which honored my grandmother (the M), my great aunt Margaret Mae (MarMae), who was a great lady, and my husband's maternal grandmother, Mae. If she was a boy, she was to be Aidan Gilbert (the Gilbert for my husband's father, who died the year before).

My family are full of Henrys, Arthurs and Edwards.  I did inherit the Edward as a middle name.

We decided to call our son Phillip Daniel, just because we liked both names.  Strangely, in my tree (over 1700 entries), I do not have a single Phillip or Daniel in there.

My son is Daniel and we thought he was the first in the family with that name, but I have found at least 2 in the family in the 19th century. And we thought we were being so original and getting away from family names.

I have some weird and wonderfull names in my family tree that I am glad to say that myself, or my siblings did not inherit. HORACE!
My eldest son was named after his Great Grandfather ANTON, my youngest son after both his Grandfathers JOSEPH JOHN.
My other children were not named after anybody, but when I started my family tree and found my G G Grandmothers name KATERINA, which is my eldest daughters name .
Others children son... Connor, Daughters LORETTA, and JESSICA.
Have run out of names to pick from now, so will just stop at the 6 children I have, Lol

Am I alone in liking the fact that nearly all of my ancestors seem to have had the same names? Or just lucky in that the Scottish Naming Pattern has made things easier for me  :)

Leagan, you asked about registered names and baptismal names, I have the same instance - registered one thing and christened another -and I believe that the legal name is the one on your birth certificate.

My daughter is called Isabel Alexandra, I wanted Alexandra and her father wanted Isabel. My grandmother was Isobel (as is my missing from birth certifcate christened name) so I agreed but wanted it spelt with an 'o'. My husband is German and objected on the grounds 'that people in Germany would think he couldn't spell'.  Just before she was born, I was in a shop and noticed some 'name' mugs. 'Oh look' I said 'they have spelt Isabel incorrectly on that mug, they've spelt it with 2 L's'. 'No that's correct' he said 'in Germany Isabell is spelt Isabell'.  'Oh no' said I, 'people will think ...'

I was thrilled when I started doing genealogy to discover that Isabel's

5G Grandmother was Isabella Barney married George Millar, Dundee 1790
3G Grandmother was Isabella Meldrum married James Lindsay, Rattray 1839
6G Aunt was Isabella Glen born 1808, Campsie
3G Aunt was Isabella Gibson born 1895, Cadder
7G Aunt was Isobel Glen born 1761, Luss
GGrandmother was Isobel Lindsay born 1900, Glasgow
4G Aunt was Isobell Meldrum born 1799, Wemyss

She is the first Alexandra but again previously unknown to me, she has over 20 Alexander relations, must be genetic memory :)

Incidentally re: names in Germany, they actually will not allow you to register a child by an ambiguous first name, gender must be clear from the name....  also re: the post on Nellie and horse's names and someone wanting to have a Heidi, the Swiss will tell you that Heidi is a cow's name  :P

I have no actual children but do have a "virtual" family.  I have two boys, Oliver and James, and four girls, Celia, Lydia, Madeleine and Rose.  The great thing is they've never kept me awake at night, never given me a moment's worry and don't cost me a penny!

I have a 16 week old son named Alexander John. My gf John died when I was three and I vowed if I ever had a son his mn would be John. Hubby wanted Jonty(!) but I wouldn't budge. We chose Alexander because we liked it, but there are several Alexanders on both sides of our trees (Scottish heritage), and my other grandfather's father and grandfather were both John Alexander. This grandfather died a month before I became pregnant so it was a nice coincidence.

There is a little tradition in my family that I hope to keep going. My mother's middle name Rae is after her grandfather Ray, and mine is Lyn after my recently deceased grandfather Lindsay. So if we ever have a daughter her middle name will be Grace after her grandfather (my dad) Graham.

Me and my Mum should have both been Eva as my gm, ggm, and gggm were all Eva's. If we have a second daughter (and I am getting WAY ahead of myself here!!!) we would like to resurrect the name as hubby also has several Eva's in his family, including a ggm who is still going strong at 103!

Most of the names in my tree are fairly standard, but I have come across Sybella, which I really like. Unfortunately hubby hates it.

I like the idea of using family names, but only if I really like them and would consider them even if there was no family link. The Arthurs, Normans, and Gwendas of hubby's family will never get a look in!!

Kez :)

Never added a pic before so I don't know whether it'll work or not.

He was 8 weeks early, that is why he still looks a little small for his age. This pic was taken today, first photo I got of him smiling!
