So many times since starting looking into the family history, I have said I wish I had done it before my daughters were born as they would certainly have been given family names had I known what they were. In the end we gave both of them Persian first names, the eldest is Shahla Olivia after her youngest paternal aunt, and the second is Parisa Nicole ( pronounced Par -ee-sa) a name which we both liked even though there is no family connection. If I was naming them now, Shahla would have Frances as a middle name and Parisa would have Ellen, both of which have appeared through many generations on both sides of my family.
Neither myself of my brother were given family names and Im just glad that my mum put her foot down, if my dad had had it his way, rather than a brother called Ian I would have had one called Rupert!!  That would have gone down so well at school in the 70s and 80s!!   :-X :-X

My first son is named after family Andrew Laurence Philip. Andrew is his fathers middle name and Laurance and Philip are his grandfathers.

When the 2nd child was on the way I thought it was perfect the girl would be called the same way, except after being told I was having a daughter, a week before he was born I was told I was having a Son.

So oh dear no boys names - what to do? Asked the grandmas about their fathers names - what a choice - Athur, Fred (Not Fredrick - just Fred), Horace or Thadeous.

My 2nd son is very happy I didnt name him after family - he is a Matthew (a Gift from God)

My grandfather used to tell us frequently, "There's always been a Charles in my family", and there were certainly several generations of Charles, but he named my father, his only son, Fred.  Not Frederick or Alfred, but just Fred.  ;)  None of Grandfather's siblings called their children Charles either.  Grandfather was called Alfred, but was himself known as Fred, even entered himself on the 1911 census as Fred.

To make up for the lack of a Charles my brother called his younger son Matthew Charles.

I've always liked my middle name, Alexander, so if I ever have a son I will probably name him that.

As for a girl, my sister is named Marie as is my auntie. I've always liked the name so I will probably name my daughter Marie, if only as a middle name.

Really love the name Alexander (Hubby's middle name) and also a family name way back (was not carried on)...........also like jensquest I am partial to the name Frances and have 7 generations to prove just how popular it was  ;D

I have three children............and I wonder what they might call their children, not that any of them are thinking about becoming parents just yet. Second daughter likes the name Jane, and there is a heap of them in the family, tho not for a few generations.
