I always intended to call a daughter Laura, after my grandmother whom we all loved dearly. Amazingly, she looks very much like her.

If we had known in time, we would have called our son 'Matthew' as he shared the same birthday as an uncle in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Unfortunately, we didn't find that out until we took our baby to show him to the aunts and uncles in Geordieland

My daughter has given her eldest son the middle name of Owen, which was my father's middle name, and his uncle's middle name.  Only problem is, I haven't the foggiest idea how this name came into the family  :-X  Oh, the joys of family history!!!!

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

If I had a male child I would have to give him the middle name Conway. It was my brother whose name is David Conway Dowdeswell 1935 that started me thinking about family history. I have since found great uncle Arthur Conway Dowdeswell 1880 and the son of one of his brothers William Conway Dowdeswell 1906. I am now back to 1811 with 80 plus names on my tree. If anyone comes across any other Conway's I would love to hear even if a different surname as they may be sons of a married female in the line. Cheers all Linefinder.

I have the middle name Elizabeth after my grandmother (her middle name). I gave my daughter the same middle name to carry on the tradition. Much later I started researching my family and found that on both sides the name Elizabeth occurs in every generation. Not an uncommon name I know, but it's nice to think it's sort of a family name too.
My daughter has now given her daughter the same middle name of Elizabeth  :)

I had my 1st baby 19 days ago (Oct 15th) and we called her Jemima Maple Mary.

Jemima has no link to family history, but as I'm a teacher we wanted something a bit unusual. Maple is her paternal great grandmas first name, she was born in Canada. Mary was my grans middle name, she died a year ago and wanted the name carrying on as it was her grandmothers name also, whom gran really admired and even wrote a story about her life. It also happens to be my aunts middle name, my partners gran, mum and sisters middle name too.

Congratulations, Legs, and welcome Jemima Maple Mary - lovely name!  :D

I hadn't started researching when my children were born, and it didn't occur to me at the time to record family names in what they were called.  I wish I had done, now - both of them have completely unrelated names, although my daughter's is of Italian provenance and is quite unusual so I suppose that's something which could possibly be passed down the family!

I just remembered an absolute gem, and it is quite genuine; the gentleman was still alive when I was a child, in fact he died in 1950  (born in 1863)

Eugene Kossuth Kosciusko WHITNEY    'Eugene' looks as if it was a family name. OH tells me that 'Kossuth' was a Hungarian patriot, and I know that 'Kosciusko' was a (?)Polish one  (He and the Australian mountain named after the same person, presumably)

There is a birth registered in the same district in 1859 for a
   Eugene Jeanotte Roscuisko WHITNEY
who, if not a sister, is likely to be a relative

The above was actually a BOY who died aged 3. The index is transcribed as Eugene Jeannette Rosina!

There were some fairly radical people living here! They didn't call us 'Red Rance' for nothing. 'Rance', with a long 'a' is the local pronunciation of 'Raunds'
