Victoria Home Motherwell
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 15:37 BST (UK) »
Hi there - I had a relative who died in 1920 aged 17 of Influenzal Pneumonia (Spanish ‘Flu?).
His address was given as “The Victoria Home, Motherwell”.
Can anybody tell me where this was situated and whether it was an orphanage or a working man’s hostel?
Thanks.

It was indeed a working man's Model Lodging House, situated in Orbiston Street at the corner of Meadow Road. It was still there in the 1950's but not used as a Model, although I'm not too sure of that, to be honest!

On closer inspection of the 1925 Motherwell Directory, the postal address for Victoria Home is given as No.1 Meadow Road. The superintendent's name was John Grant and the various occupants are listed individually by surname throughout the directory.

That's the very one Lud, Jan Stepek was a self-made man, probably a millionaire (when that meant something) he had an electrical shop on Brandon Street, opposite the Dalziel Arms almost, and also his original shop in Hamilton. The first big electrical retailer in the county I think, just when folk were able to afford to buy, rather than rent, their own television. (I think he was from Poland?)
I also like the other picture, of the Flemington Bar, it was a rough shop, Mrs Givens wouldn't have stood for the carry-on in there! I remember Big Mary the barmaid and Martin Smith who sang there at the weekends, he lived in my street.
Happy dazes.  ;D
