Queens Park, Heywood
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 09:17 BST (UK) »
As a child I lived right next to Queens Park, and played in it almost daily.

Having used Google maps, I've found the house we used to live in, right next to the park gates, and my curiosity has been stirred up !   (We lived in the house with the white door)

Any ideas about this park ?   Which Queen ?   Was it once part of a grand house ?  What is its history ?   When were the row of houses next to it built ?   Were they once estate workers cottages ?

I'm still searching for when Park Terrace was built.   As a child I remember stone flagged floors downstairs, and a small back yard, opening into a slightly large garden with a (non flush) toilet at the end of the garden !   There was a large black range in the back room ...

My parents/father was posted to Heywood in the war in about 1942 and when they married and had me (!) they rented 10 Park Terrace.    I started school at St Michaels church school in Bamford, and we moved away to London when I was about 6 or 7 ....

1911 census - Using the address search facility on FindMyPast - and assuming I've got the correct Heywood.  Park Terrace was alive at that time - 6 residences  2 - 12.  :-\

My father was posted to the RAF maintenance place in or hear Heywood; being disabled he didn't join up so worked on maintenance .... I think of aircraft ?

I'm getting more interested !    Isn't it such a pity when all the people we could ask are long dead  :(

Just checked the 1901 census - Park Terrace 2 - 12 in existence.  1891 census - no sign.

So you think it was maybe built between 1891 and 1901.

Thanks for that !
