The previous Station Master left in 1958 and he lodged in Mill Hill (Blackburn); the one before him also lived in Blackburn. There used to be a house with the job up to 1951 on The Straits in Hoghton. John Hammond served 1958 to 1960.

That narrows it considerably but there are no John Hammond deaths in Blackburn between 1960 - 2007

If he only took over in 1958 he may not even have worked for the railways in 1939. 

He could have lived in any locality and returned there after 1960.  Preston was not that far but there is only one death in Preston and he was William John F Hammond b 1891 meaning he would have been 67 in 1958.  The 1939 entry for him does not support a railway connection

The John Leonard Hammond b Liverpool 1910 married and died there in 1995

If you have looked at the 1939 register I suspect you have looked at the wrong entry

Well after spending much of yesterday looking for John Hammond and his wife Minnie Bake I've hit an impasse. Are the electoral roles for Blackburn and Preston the next step (i don't have access)?

If he occupied the station house for his 2yr stint as station master ER's will not tell you anything about him apart from his name & that of his wife (if present)

Online ER's for Lancashire are only available to 1935 so you would have to visit the Records Office to view 1958-1960.

Thanks Carole. The house that went with the position of Station Master for Hoghton was removed in approx. 1956. John L Hammond's predecessor; 1956 - 1958, had lodgings in Mill Hill, Blackburn. It could be possible that JH took the same house on(?).

Unless you have an address in Blackburn for the lodgings - you will not be able to search ER's.  Also - it's a very short period of 2yrs so he may not be on an ER
