I think we all need to be tolerant.

I'd be very unhappy at any new chatter being chastised!

We can offer advise that helps everyone get the best out of Rootschat and after a bit of time nearly everyone recognises the sageness of this advise.

If you see someone who needs a bit of help and a friendly PM from a mod may help in your opinion then please report the post using the "Report to Moderator" link and ask one of us to kindly 'ave a word.

We can then highlight some of the sticky posts in Beginners and here in the Common Room that may help them.

I've posted before on the "behaviours" that  are bit less helpful.  But one that remains a bit of a problem is not replying publicly.

Many people give their thanks by PM - which is lovely but as mods we don't know if the thread is finished.  It would be nice if people Thanked or responded on the thread.

Now we've all aired our gripes again.

Pam

I will not post to this thread again after this one message - since 16th August, that is 8 days, I have posted replies to 5 queries without any form of acknowledgement. >:(
I have posted quite a few others that were replied to by the enquirer. :)
That would tend to show that an alarming percentage of people who make enquiries are incapable of observing the most common courtesies. :(

It should be noted though that on other websites and lists a request can go months before anyone replies.

Maybe newer folk just don't realise that they are likely to get replies in minutes not months?

Also not everyone gets to check there mail often.  I know some Chatters logon in a library therefore may not get to acknowledge.

Then againI may live in a fantasy world full of pink kittens and butterflies  ;D ;D ;D

Agreed.
Yet I have seen plenty of requesters who are still logging in, and have not bothered to reply, so it is not the case that they have not re-visted the site.

On the positive side, I have had people who close the thread for the moderators (- I took to adding a note to my replies), AND then PM me with their thanks.  Hooray for that minority, I'd have given up long ago without them!.

Seems I do too - I do look-ups and nearly always (or so I think ;) ) get positive feedback.

I agree that it is rude not to say thank you and I try to thank everyone who helps me no matter how small the information is.

I do not have many resources at home so am not really able to help others as these guys do, so I always acknowledge any response because I am grateful for the time they have given me.

As I collect more resources of my own, I hope to be able to help others.

Please, all you searchers, continue the good work - the majority of us do appreciate your hard work.

THANK YOU

Nadine

Thanks Pam ........... nicely and gently put ........ I wish I could have used those very words.
I have had more help from rootschat in the short while since I subscribed and I have thanked a lot of the good people who are subscribing to this very topic for their efforts on my behalf .......... and I get 'very proud of my oldself' when, in my small way, I am able to help someone else .... although I do get disappointed when not acknowledged so I do appreciate the frustration that others experience.
My greatest disappointment was to find a 1C2R in Canada who was looking for background which I fortunately had going back over four generations ......... so I sent it on .............. I did get a 'thank you' just two words .......... but nothing else and I would have loved to know more about his background since his folks arrived in Canada in 1912.
I guess we must wear the shortcomings of others ......... however I would hope that we do not become too politically correct.
