German Ancestor search help please
« on: Thursday 02 July 20 14:09 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather has such a story but I am desperate to find more about his beginnings in Germany.

It appears he was born around 1865 - Heinrich Henke - in Groseneder Westfalen Germany

He may have emigrated or travelled to Scotland. He met his future wife there... family recollections say he had a sister who introduced them even though I have no record of her, possibly Emilie or Emma.

He travelled to Australia in 1890 and worked on board ships between NSW and Victoria until around 1892.  He then bought Agnes Stanton (nee Brown) to Victoria Australia where they married in September 1893.  Their life then took them to South Africa where he supposedly was the manager at a Gold Mine.  They had 4 children together there between 1895-1903.  When his son died in South Africa in 1911 the family moved to Australia.

When he married in Australia he took on the name Harry Hanks.  His naturalisation certificate states he was born in Groseneder Westfalen Germany.  His death certificate stated his fathers name was "Harry"  so assume it was probably Heinrich as well.

I am looking for any info on his possible parents... details of his travel or emigration to Scotland.

Großeneder is a small village (population today of 845), which may help tracking people down.

Don't know if this DVD could help?

I typed "Heinrich Henke Groseneder" into Google and came up with the following website:
www.grosseneder.de

It has a list of young men who left the village in the mid 1800s, apparently to dodge the draft as we would say nowadays.

There are 2 Henke names on the list: Heinrich b. 20 Nov 1849, parents Anton Henke and Elisabeth Müller, who went to America in 1867 and Johannes Dominicus b. 5 Sept 1816, parents Bernhard Henke and Margarete Michels who left before 1835, destination unknown.

The section listing the emigrants is in English. The website has a visitors' book (Gästebuch) so you could possibly post your query in English in it and see if you come up lucky.

Happy hunting.

did he die in Golden Square , Victoria in 1914 ??  I see you are online  :)
ADDED
The Heinrich Hencke I have found states he died in Golden Square ,Victoria ,Australia in 1914 and was born in 1847
he emigrated from Liverpool on 11th December 1872 from Liverpool England ( where I live coincidentally) he was 26 when he emigrated - he arrived in Melbourne

is this him ??....if not I will delete my post so it doesn't confuse people - OR - as he appears to be about 20 years too old - is it possibly some relation and thats why Heinrich born about 1865 went to Australia in the first place ??   sorry if this is confusing you - it is a bit of a shot in the dark  ::)

I have just relooked at this and I think this is not the same Heinrich Henke!

I just found a death burial notice for him in Ballarat and the timeline isnt right so this rules out that he was born in Groseneder.  I found a Naturalisation certificate for him in Ballarat ... a miner... and this form listed the birthplace which is why i mentioned it as no where else does it specify the place rather than a general Westfalen Prussia Germany.

SO Prussia,  Westfalen yes but not necessarily Groseneder.

I also found three Henke families emigrating from Germany to New Zealand which includes a father and son named Heinrich Henke perfectly fitting the birth date but now am unsure if this is the Ballarat Henke or the Western Australia one.

Oh the web we weave  *sigh

Hi

I will shortly be responding to the post you placed on the New Zealand board very recently.

It does seem to me from what I've been able to find to date, that the Heinrich HENKE father and son combination who settled in New Zealand, are not the persons you are seeking.
I will add my findings to the NZ thread so you can see how I have reached my conclusion.  :)
