Firstname used in USA was Delia, what is that short for?

Delia is commonly used in Ireland as a pet name for Bridget. I read somewhere that Bedelia was used as the Latin for Bridget in Baptisms but I can't vouch for this.

I'm trying to find a record of my Great Grandfather's sister on the 1901 census, I only know her name used after she arrived in America around 1900 was Delia Doyle, but I know Irish people sometimes changed their name to sound more American - like Bridget became Bertha (etc), any idea what Delia could have been when she was living in Ireland. She was born in Wicklow sometime between 1873 - 1890.

If she arrived in America around 1900, you won’t find her on the 1901 census 
What was your Gt Grandfather's name and when and where was he born?
Do you have her in U S? Did she go to your Great Grandfather or arrive with him?
Where did she/ they settle?

I agree with others - the Delias I know were baptised Bridget.

You started a thread here and mention a Great Grandparents Wood and Doyle but it is a female Ellen Doyle.
Is that a different family?

Hello, so my Great Great Grandparents (Delia Parents) were Christopher Doyle & Maria Flynn. I know they lived in Bray until late 1890's and then moved to Charlemont Street in Dublin by 1901 & 1911 census. I never knew of Delia's existence until last week when US relations made contact. Up until last week I thought I had found the baptism & birth records of all their children, I believe 8 of these were still living by 1911 - Mary, Denis, Henry, Ellen, Elizabeth, Thomas, John (Jack) & Anna Doyle. However I have just reviewed the 1911 census and Maria does state on it that she has 9 children still living - so this must include Delia. They married in 1873 in Bray and she's not on the census with either parent in 1901 or 1911 so she must have either emigrated or being working as a servant by 1901 census - so that would mean she was born sometime between 1873 & about 1885 - but I checked on Ireland Genealogy and can find no Bridget Doyle birth cert with mother's name as Flynn.

FYI - The US relations are direct descendants of the eldest brother Denis Doyle, they know nothing about Delia, except that their Great Grandfather Denis had a sister called Delia who was in America (New York) with him.

Hi thanks. Yes I saw that earlier.
I would look at the births of the children you have - presumably you have the eight you name and those  who died and look for any gaps where there could be another birth.
I appreciate it is difficult with the surname but it might work.

Do you have more details re Denis in America - wife, children etc.
Do you have him in the census?

Denis was born in 1875, I just know he had a son Christopher Doyle and Christopher was orphaned young. Denis wife name was Sarah, her surname I don't know. That's all I have.
