Marriage Bernard Ward and Mary Callaghan
« on: Friday 19 June 20 23:16 BST (UK) »
Hello there:
Trying to locate a marriage record for Bernard Ward and Mary Callaghan. Bernard appears on the 1881 census in Toxteth, as a shoemaker. He is there with his wife, Mary, and their child, Edward, age 1. Additionally, Bernard's brother, Hugh, is also living with them. I've located christening records for Edward, which indicate Callaghan is the birth mother, but so far have been unable to locate a marriage record for Bernard and Mary. I have also searched irish records, as Bernard was originally from Ireland.
Any help is very much appreciated.

No marriage in England so 3 possibilities

They married in Ireland
They never married
Mary was previously married so married Bernard under her married name.  Children born to the second marriage will show her true maiden name of Callaghan

Edward was born 22.11.1879 & baptised 24.11.1879 - Mary/Mariae is shown as Callaghan on the baptismal record

There are trees on Ancestry which have Bernard Ward, b 9th July 1848 in Ballymaginthy, Ireland, and Mary (O')Callaghan b about 1851 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

According to the trees, the 1911 Irish census gives their marriage as 1874 but nobody seems to have the details.

1901 Census - Raglan Street, Smithfield, Antrim, Ireland
Bernard Ward - 51
Mary Ward - 50
Edward Ward - 22
John Ward - 16
James Ward - 13

Thank you all for the replies. I simply can't understand how a marriage goes undocumented..

The 1911 shows them as married for 37yrs so approx 1874

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001532739/

FamilySearch only has 2 marriages for a Bernard Ward - 1873 Downpatrick & 1874 Mohill.  Neither match to a Mary Callaghan

Have you tried this site?

The townland that Bernard gave as his birthplace in Co. Down is probably Ballymaginaghy. That’s in the parish of Drumgooland. Griffiths Valuation list about 4 Ward households, all small farms (typically 4 acres). Plots 32, 35, 36 & 71. These were all close to each other and so are probably related. Today they are near the Ballymaginaghy Rd, outside Castlewellan.

That’s in the RC parish of Drumgooland Upper. Their records start in 1827 so you may find Bernard’s baptism there on the nli site:

4 or 5 Ward households there in 1901:

Is this Bernard’s brother Hugh (who was with him in England in the 1881 census):

This is probably Hugh Ward’s marriage to Catherine O’Hagan in 1877. If so, his father was named Edward. (Was Hugh married in the 1881 census?)
