For the last two years I’ve cancelled my annual worldwide Ancestry membership and then immediately used the helpful link on Rootschat to resubscribe at half price.

I’m on the point of cancelling again and the website offers me the opportunity to pause membership, cancel membership or a ‘new’ option – ‘preserve my tree’ for £5.49 a month. (it says this will keep the tree active, retain progress made and allow the viewing of attached records).

I don’t want to preserve my tree, I want to keep working on it… but for the ‘cancel’ option the wording states “your tree stays active, but you ‘LOSE’ the records attached to it… you can view your family tree, but no record attached to it...”

Obviously I wouldn’t expect to view the records until I’ve resubscribed, but I wouldn’t actually ‘lose’ them, would I? If I resubscribed they would all just reappear?

That has always been the case, but the phrasing ‘lose’ the records is a bit alarming... I can't remember what wording was used when I last cancelled  :(

I cancelled my subscription a few days ago, ahead of my renewal date late next month, and I still have access to all the BMD, census records etc that are attached to the people in my trees.  My account now says that my subscription ends 25 July 2025, so sometime after then I'll use the 50% off offer to renew.  Hope this helps.

I cancelled and re subscribed via the link on here and all my links still show. I presume the £5.49 allows you to see the records ( but not search for or attach more ) which you definitely can’t if unsubscribed. Jo

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, thinking about it, I can't imagine all the documents wouldn't reappear on re-subscribing.

It would have been better if they had said something like 'you'll no longer be able to view the documents attached to your tree, unless you resubscribe' rather than saying 'you'll lose them!'
