Yipee  ;D Exactly what I was hoping for.  Thanks very much BumbleB.

I've been trying to pin down Herbert Watkins whom I suspect is Isabella's illegitimate son.  Born 1869 Herefordshire but the birth record that appears to be his I don't think is the right one.  I got the birth cert for this one:-

WATKINS, HERBERT  DREW WAUCHOPE    SMITH
GRO Reference: 1869  M Quarter in HEREFORD & DORE  Volume 06A  Page 526

which revealed that his parents were Henry Watkins and Isabella Watkins formerly Smith.  Can't find a marriage for this couple at all.  Birth place Bartonsham Hereford.  I couldn't find this family anywhere.

I have a feeling that the Herbert that I have been chasing did not have his birth recorded.

He married a Nellie Cross in 1895 and the father's details are blank.  Then Herbert doesn't appear with his wife ever again.

She remarries in 1908 claiming to be a widow but I'm not sure whether she really was.  I can find Herbert in 1901 as married and 1911 as single.  After that Herbert vanishes.

Right old conundrum this one.  Herbert and Nellie were the parents of the man who married my parents in 1948 - Ivor Stanley Watkins Bishop of Malmesbury at the time.

Whether I will be able to solve Herbert or not.................. :-\

Hi there.
My 3 x Great grandad was Thomas Watkins the father of Isabella who married John Dakin. I believe that Herbert you are looking for is the son of either Thomas's sons James Watkins (B -1853) or Thomas Watkins (B-1836) I think on of them married Ann Merry but am still to confirm this.

1851 census shows
they lived in Much Dewchurch
Thomas 52
Isabella 52
James (son) 18
Herbert (g/son)

Name:    Herbert Watkins
Gender:    Male
Baptism Date:    29 Apr 1849
Baptism Place:    Llanarth,Monmouth,England
Father:
Thomas Watkins
Mother:
Ann
FHL Film Number:    104875
I hope this helps

Hello Taffia

Thank you for posting on my post re Herbert and for your pm.  I did finally crack the problem.

The 1869 birth certificate I obtained was the correct one.  His mother was indeed Isabella but his father was fictitious.

I found Herbert and his mother on the 1911 census and in the relationship column Herbert had been described as son.  This was crossed out and boarder put in instead.

I obtained Isabel/Isabella's death certificate and the informant is stated as being H.D.W. Watkins, Son.  That for me meant that I had found the right birth certificate for Herbert.

His mother had gone in for an elaborate cover up to hide the fact that Herbert was illegitimate.  In 1869 there wouldn't have been any requirement for both parents to be present when recording a birth.  Nor presumably any proof required that the parents had married.

The delights of family history research  ;D

James Watkins 26 occ plasterer
father Thomas, occ plasterer
